For years, New Buffalo, Michigan, has been my family’s go-to destination for memorable getaways. My history with this charming lakeside town stretches back to childhood, creating a deep-rooted connection. From childhood summer beach days to now exploring with my own family of four, New Buffalo holds a special place in our hearts. When it came to planning our first family vacation with our eldest, Noah, heading to the shores of Lake Michigan felt like the perfect choice. We rented a beachfront house and embarked on a vacation that created lasting memories. Since that initial trip, we’ve returned almost annually, now experiencing the joys of New Buffalo as a family of four.
Let me share some of our favorite spots and Buffalo Family Activities we’ve discovered in Southwest Michigan over the years!
Getting to New Buffalo for Family Fun
New Buffalo’s convenient location, just about 90 minutes from Chicago, makes it incredibly accessible for a day trip or a longer family weekend escape. For those preferring public transportation, Amtrak offers a direct route to downtown New Buffalo, with several trains running daily. My husband, Manny, has often utilized this option when joining us after work in the city.
Southwest Michigan, and New Buffalo in particular, is brimming with buffalo family activities. There truly is something to captivate every member of the family. The public beach offers rentals for kayaks and paddle boats for adventurous families. A short drive away are the fascinating Indiana Dunes, perfect for a nature-filled day trip. And for parents looking for a bit of adult relaxation, the region boasts numerous markets, wineries, breweries, and distilleries to explore after a day of family fun.
While the options for buffalo family activities are plentiful, I’ve curated a list of our family’s tried-and-true favorite spots and wineries that we frequent.

Dablon Winery opened in 2015 and has become a family favorite for wine tasting. Discovered during our explorations along the Wine Trail, we were delighted to find it was owned by the same people as the Music Box Theater in Chicago! They offer tours and often have live music. Sitting outside, overlooking the vineyards while enjoying their wine is incredibly relaxing. I highly recommend their Chardonnay, even for non-Chardonnay drinkers – it’s exceptionally buttery.
