A Family Affair Movie Review: Age-Gap Romance Falls Flat Despite Joey King and Kathy Bates

Romance movies often thrive on familiar tropes and clichés, and that’s precisely why we adore them. The magic lies in how these films elevate the basic romantic premise, perhaps through compelling chemistry, a fresh plot twist, or outstanding performances. However, the movie a family affair sadly misses the mark on several of these crucial elements.

While my rating leans towards a more generous view, it’s primarily thanks to Kathy Bates, who shines as the mother-in-law to Nicole Kidman’s character, and Joey King, portraying Zara Ford, the determined PA to a self-absorbed movie star. These supporting actresses offer a glimmer of watchability in an otherwise disappointing film.

The central issue lies squarely with our lead actors. The age-gap romance, a trope in itself, isn’t inherently problematic. The real downfall is the glaring lack of chemistry between Nicole Kidman (as Brooke Harwood) and Zac Efron (as Chris Cole). Adding to the distraction, both actors’ heavily altered appearances make it difficult to fully immerse oneself in their performances. Had there been genuine sparks between them, these superficial distractions might have been more easily overlooked.

Furthermore, the acting, particularly from Kidman and Efron, is underwhelming. Efron, in particular, delivers a performance that feels more akin to a made-for-TV movie than a feature film. King and Bates are the exceptions, injecting much-needed energy and credibility into their roles, making the film somewhat palatable.

Interestingly, the storyline focused on Joey King’s character and her ambitions within the film industry is genuinely engaging, and King’s portrayal is a highlight. She undeniably carries the movie. Regrettably, the primary romance plotline is lackluster and fails to evoke any real emotional investment.

Adding to its challenges, a family affair arrives shortly after another age-gap romance film starring Anne Hathaway, which also suffered from a lack of chemistry between its leads. This timing further diminishes the impact of a family affair. Despite a plot with some initial promise, the miscasting and underwhelming performances of Kidman and Efron ultimately detract from the film’s potential.

In conclusion, a family affair is best viewed for the performances of Joey King and Kathy Bates. They offer a silver lining in a movie that otherwise struggles to deliver on its romantic premise.
