The YMCA of Boca Raton and the wider community mourn the loss of Peter Blum, a man whose unwavering commitment and vision were instrumental in shaping the organization into the beloved institution it is today. Peter Blum passed away on Monday, January 23, 2023, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of service and dedication to the YMCA and the families it serves.

Peter Blum’s connection with the YMCA began in his childhood in Peoria, Illinois. As he often recounted, the YMCA was practically his second home, a place where he spent countless formative hours. This early experience instilled in him a deep appreciation for the YMCA’s values and its vital role in community development. When Peter Blum moved to Boca Raton, he carried this passion with him, envisioning a similar haven for the families in his new community.

In 1969, Peter Blum, alongside a group of like-minded community leaders, embarked on the ambitious journey of establishing a YMCA in Boca Raton. Their collective determination and tireless efforts culminated in the official incorporation of the YMCA of Boca Raton in 1972. This achievement marked the realization of a shared dream, and Peter Blum’s leadership was pivotal in navigating the challenges of bringing this vision to life.

For over five decades, Peter Blum remained deeply involved with “his” YMCA. His presence was a familiar and welcome sight, particularly in the preschool, where he regularly volunteered to read to the children. His words, “We just welcome everybody (at the Y). It’s a safe place, it’s affordable, it’s a family center. It’s more than I ever thought,” encapsulate his belief in the YMCA’s inclusive and nurturing environment. Peter Blum’s dedication extended beyond simple involvement; he was a driving force in attracting significant donors and supporters to the YMCA of Boca Raton, ensuring its financial stability and continued growth. Figures like Richard and Helen DeVos, Eugene and Christine Lynn, and William B. Ziff, Jr., among many others, joined the YMCA family thanks to Peter Blum’s persuasive advocacy and deep-seated belief in its mission.

Peter Blum’s leadership roles within the YMCA were numerous and impactful. He served as the 4th Board Chair in 1978, guiding the organization’s strategic direction. Furthermore, he spearheaded capital campaigns that were crucial in establishing both YMCA campuses, expanding the organization’s reach and capacity to serve the community. His commitment was further recognized through his membership in the prestigious Heritage Club and, most notably, through the annual Peter Blum Legacy Award, the YMCA of South Palm Beach County’s highest honor, bestowed upon individuals demonstrating exceptional service and dedication.

The YMCA community and all who knew him will deeply miss Peter Blum’s warm smile, gentle spirit, and unwavering dedication to children and families. His legacy as a founder, leader, and friend will continue to inspire and guide the YMCA of Boca Raton for generations to come.

A Celebration of Life to honor Peter Blum will be held on Monday, February 6, 2023, at 1:00 pm at St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church in Boynton Beach, Florida. In lieu of flowers, Peter Blum’s family requests that donations be made to The Y (YMCA) at 6631 Palmetto Circle South, Boca Raton, FL 33433, or to the Bethesda Hospital Foundation, in recognition of his enduring commitment to both the YMCA and the broader community.
