Memphis, Tennessee, offers a vibrant mix of culture, history, and outdoor activities perfect for families. Recently, we took a little break to explore some of the city’s gems, and it turned out to be a fantastic experience, reminding us of the simple joys and family-friendly spots Memphis has to offer.
One of our first stops was a place that truly felt like an escape within the city – the Dixon Gallery and Gardens. Stepping into this space, you’re immediately transported away from the urban hustle. Currently featuring an exhibit by local artist Brittney Boyd Bullock, whose colorful and mixed media works are captivating, the Dixon also boasts a wonderful permanent collection. However, the gardens are the real highlight. Winding paths lead you through diverse trees, plants, and flowers, creating a serene environment ideal for a family stroll. We found peaceful spots perfect for a moment of quiet reflection, and learned they even host family-friendly yoga sessions and native plant sales throughout the year. The outdoor sculpture garden is a unique experience, blending art with nature in a way that’s unlike anywhere else in Memphis.
After immersing ourselves in the tranquility of the gardens, we shifted gears and headed downtown, the energetic heart of Memphis. We checked into The Hilton Garden Inn, a conveniently located hotel across from Auto Zone Park. This spot is a home run for sports-loving families, being near the Memphis Redbirds baseball and 901 FC soccer games, and within walking distance of the Memphis Grizzlies NBA games. For those who enjoy soaking in the city vibe, The Greyhound bar, just off the hotel lobby, offers a great street-side patio. We enjoyed some shareable small plates while watching the downtown buzz – a perfect way to unwind and people-watch.
Craving something sweet, we took a short walk to Margie’s 901 Homemade Ice Cream. This place is a must-visit! The ice cream, all made in-house, was absolutely delicious, and the owner, Velmo Bobo, added to the charm with her warm and welcoming personality. Sitting outside, enjoying our treats and watching the iconic Memphis streetcars roll by, was a delightful way to end the day. These trolley rides are not just transportation; they’re a fun experience for the whole family, offering a unique perspective of downtown Memphis.
Memphis is full of these kinds of family-friendly surprises, blending cultural experiences with simple pleasures. From peaceful gardens to lively downtown streets, there’s something for every family to discover and enjoy in this dynamic city.
