Matt Flynn, M.D. – Founder and Board-Certified Dermatologist
Dr. Matt Flynn, the founder of Family Dermatology Apex in 2003, brings exceptional credentials and a deep commitment to patient care. Originally from California, Dr. Flynn’s academic journey began with a B.A. in applied mathematics from Harvard University, followed by graduating first in his class at Duke Medical School. His rigorous training continued with an internship at UC San Francisco and a residency and chief residency in dermatology at Stanford University.
Beyond his private practice, Dr. Flynn is dedicated to community service. He was honored with a Presidential Service Award from President Obama for his volunteer work as a dermatologist for Wake County’s Department of Pediatrics. He also serves as the team dermatologist for the Carolina Hurricanes, demonstrating his broad expertise and dedication. Dr. Flynn is also a respected author, having co-authored several medical board review books. His leadership and expertise are central to the high standards of care at Family Dermatology Apex.
Shaily Bhatnagar, M.D. – Board-Certified Dermatologist
Dr. Shaily Bhatnagar, a board-certified dermatologist at Family Dermatology Apex, is passionate about providing comprehensive and compassionate care. Her journey in medicine began at Duke University, where she earned a B.A. in public policy with a biology minor. Dr. Bhatnagar then pursued her medical degree at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. Her commitment to dermatological research was evident early in her career, as she was selected for a prestigious Doris Duke Clinical Research fellowship focusing on melanoma research at the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill.
Dr. Bhatnagar’s residency in dermatology was completed at UNC, where she also served as chief resident, further solidifying her clinical expertise and leadership skills. Her dedication to the field and patient well-being makes her a valued member of the Family Dermatology Apex team.
Kelly Blount, P.A.-C. – Certified Physician Assistant
Kelly Blount, P.A.-C., is a highly experienced Certified Physician Assistant who has been practicing dermatology since 2002, bringing over two decades of expertise to Family Dermatology Apex. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Pepperdine University and graduated from the Saint Louis University Physician Assistant Program in 2001.
Ms. Blount is actively involved in professional dermatology organizations, holding memberships in the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the North Carolina Dermatology Society, and the Triangle Dermatology Association. Ginger Smith, P.A.-C. – Certified Physician Assistant
Ginger Smith, P.A.-C., is a dedicated Certified Physician Assistant at Family Dermatology Apex, known for her expertise in general dermatology, acne, and atopic dermatitis. Andrew Schano, PA-C – Certified Physician Assistant
Andrew Schano, PA-C, brings a unique and distinguished background to Family Dermatology Apex. Certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants, he has 14 years of experience as both a Dermatology PA and Aeromedical PA. His advanced education includes a Clinical Master’s degree in Dermatology and a Master of Physician Assistant Studies from the Military Physician Assistant Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.
PA Schano’s career is marked by 20 years of active duty service in the United States Army, retiring as a Major in the Medical Specialists Corps. His last military assignment was as an Assistant Professor at the Interservice Physician Assistant Program at Fort Sam Houston, TX, where he taught dermatology to future Military PAs. His extensive experience, advanced training, and dedication to service enhance the exceptional care provided at Family Dermatology Apex.
Elizabeth MacPherson, FNP-BC – Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner
Elizabeth “Beth” MacPherson, FNP-BC, is a Board-Certified Family Nurse Practitioner with over twelve years of dedicated dermatology experience, now serving patients at Family Dermatology Apex. She earned her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from James Madison University and a Masters of Science in Nursing and Family Nurse Practitioner Certification from Northeastern University.
Prior to specializing in dermatology, Ms. MacPherson worked as a Registered Nurse in Emergency Medicine for over nine years, providing her with a broad medical foundation. She is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners, the Dermatology Nurses Association, and the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants. Her extensive experience and commitment to both medical and cosmetic dermatology ensure comprehensive patient care at Family Dermatology Apex.
Lauren Crouse, M.D. – Board-Certified Dermatologist
Dr. Lauren Crouse is a board-certified dermatologist at Family Dermatology Apex who is deeply rooted in North Carolina and committed to serving her community. She graduated from The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a major in Nutrition and minors in Chemistry and Entrepreneurship. Her dedication to service was evident during her undergraduate years as a Public Service Scholar, volunteering both domestically and abroad.
Dr. Crouse continued her medical education at the Brody School of Medicine and completed her dermatology residency at UNC-Chapel Hill. She was awarded The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship for developing a health and wellness curriculum for a local community center, highlighting her commitment to patient education and preventative care. Dr. Crouse is excited to bring her expertise and passion for patient care to Family Dermatology Apex.
Taylor Zuber, M.D. – Board-Certified Dermatologist
Dr. Taylor Zuber, a board-certified dermatologist at Family Dermatology Apex, is dedicated to providing exceptional, patient-centered dermatological care. As a Carolina Covenant Scholar, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and continued her medical education at the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, receiving the Louis M. Perlmutt Scholarship.
Dr. Zuber’s commitment to advancing dermatology is demonstrated by her research fellowship in the Dermatology Clinical Trials Unit at UNC-Chapel Hill. She completed her dermatology residency at UNC after an internship at Piedmont Athens Regional. Dr. Zuber is passionate about helping patients achieve healthy skin through evidence-based treatments and a compassionate approach at Family Dermatology Apex.
Melissa Cyr, Ph.D., ANP, FNP-BC – Double Board-Certified Nurse Practitioner
Melissa Cyr, Ph.D., ANP, FNP-BC, is a double board-certified Adult & Family Nurse Practitioner with extensive experience in dermatology since 2009, providing advanced care at Family Dermatology Apex. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a BS in Nursing from the University of Maine, earned an MS in Nursing from Northeastern University, and a Ph.D. from Northeastern University researching access barriers to dermatology care.
Dr. Cyr completed a 2-year post-graduate dermatology fellowship at Lahey Hospital & Medical Center. She is a published author of peer-reviewed manuscripts and dermatology textbook chapters, and an award-winning speaker, recognized for her expertise in the field. Her special interests include skin cancer screening/treatment, dermatologic surgery, and cosmetic procedures like Botox®. Dr. Cyr’s advanced training and research background significantly enhance the services offered at Family Dermatology Apex.
Lynn Cheng, M.D. – Board-Certified Dermatologist
Dr. Lynn Cheng, a board-certified dermatologist at Family Dermatology Apex, brings a unique background in engineering to her patient care. She earned undergraduate degrees in biomedical and electrical engineering and her medical degree from Duke University. She completed a pediatric internship at UNC and a dermatology residency at the Medical College of Wisconsin.
Dr. Cheng has experience in private practice dermatology in both Wisconsin and North Carolina. Her engineering background provides a unique perspective to her dermatological practice, enhancing her problem-solving approach to skin care. Michael McCann, P.A.-C – Certified Physician Assistant
Michael McCann, P.A.-C, is a Certified Physician Assistant at Family Dermatology Apex with a passion for patient care and a strong medical background. His medical career began early, becoming EMT certified in high school and serving in the North Carolina National Guard for 11 years. He graduated from NC State University and completed their ROTC program before earning his Master of Physician Assistant Studies from Elon University in 2022.
Prior to specializing in dermatology, Michael worked in primary care, providing him with a broad understanding of patient needs. He is a member of the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants (SDPA) and certified through the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).
