To simplify color selection, consider sticking with neutrals like cream, brown, gray, white, and tan. Alternatively, opt for colors that naturally occur in the season of your photoshoot. If you’re unsure about the best colors for your session, don’t hesitate to ask your photographer for advice! Many photographers, including myself, are delighted to offer personalized color suggestions to clients.

Spring Family Photo Outfits

Think of spring elements: tulips, crabapple blossoms, and fresh green grass. Ideal colors for spring family photos include pinks, greens, blues (navy included), creams, purples, yellows, and neutrals.

Pastel and muted shades of these colors tend to photograph more beautifully than bright or neon options. It’s best to avoid neon altogether for photos.

Summer Family Photo Outfits

Summer inspiration comes from green aspen leaves, tall grasses, and vibrant wildflowers.

For early summer sessions (June and July), great color choices are green, blue, red, purple, yellow, white, cream, and neutrals.

For late summer sessions (August and early September), stick with greens, blues, creams, and neutrals.

If the grass is lush and green, you can incorporate more vibrant clothing colors. However, as the greenery begins to dry out, softer, muted tones will blend better.

Fall Family Photo Outfits

Fall is synonymous with colorful leaves! Excellent colors for fall family sessions are gold, orange, green, blue, black, brown, white, and neutrals.

Given the naturally bright fall foliage, consider either muted colors or deeper tones like dark green and navy for your outfits.

Winter Family Photo Outfits

Winter landscapes can be quite stark, especially in regions like Wyoming and Colorado. Effective colors for winter family sessions include green, red, blue, white, brown, and neutrals.

Colors to Steer Clear Of

  • Neon Colors: Avoid neon shades in family photo outfits. They don’t photograph well and can cast unflattering colors onto skin tones. If you’re drawn to a bold color, consider a muted or darker version instead.

  • Black (with caveats): Black can be used effectively in family photos if styled thoughtfully. Avoid head-to-toe black outfits, as they can lack detail in photos. If one family member wears black (like a black dress), balance it by adding color to the rest of the family’s outfits.

  • Turquoise: While turquoise jewelry is usually fine, turquoise clothing is less recommended, even for spring and summer sessions. As it’s not a prevalent color in natural settings, it can sometimes clash with the greens of summer or yellows of fall.

Don’t shy away from patterns and texture! Texture is incredibly photogenic. Ruffles, mohair, chunky cardigans, flowing skirts – textures add depth and visual interest to your family photos.

Always try on all outfits before your session, especially on children, to ensure a good fit. You want to avoid constant adjustments during the photoshoot, like a vest or scarf that keeps covering someone’s face. If dressing a toddler, pick them up in the outfit to check for comfort and fit in various poses.

If dresses aren’t your preference, consider pairing a stylish top with a long skirt.

Highlight your favorite features and choose outfits that provide comfort and confidence. If you prefer to cover your arms, opt for dresses with sleeves or bring a light jacket, sweater, or cardigan. If you love your legs, consider shorts or a shorter dress.

Ensure you can move freely without wardrobe mishaps. Try on outfits beforehand to avoid issues like bra straps showing. Use pins or fashion tape to secure straps or choose a different bra. Family photoshoots often involve movement, and you want to be comfortable and worry-free.

Also, check for fabric transparency, especially with online purchases. Test your clothing in bright sunlight to ensure it’s not see-through, particularly for tops and skirts.

Remember, these are guidelines, not strict rules. If jeans or a romper better reflect your personal style, go for it! Comfort and authenticity are key to great family photos.

Keep men’s outfits simple and classic! Untucked button-down shirts paired with jeans or casual pants are always a great choice.

Avoid cargo shorts. While practical, shorts without bulky pockets are generally more flattering in photos.

Say no to performance fabric polo shirts! Unless worn with an undershirt, these can sometimes reveal more than intended in photos. Performance fabrics can also be less forgiving and highlight the stomach area.

Cotton polo shirts are acceptable, but button-downs, t-shirts, or flannel shirts are even better options for a relaxed yet stylish look.

Prioritize comfort for children! This cannot be emphasized enough. Ensure kids are warm enough and comfortable in their outfits. Scratchy tags, ill-fitting shoes, or disliked clothing can lead to unhappy kids during your photo session. Always have kids try on their outfits beforehand and ensure they’re happy with what they’ll be wearing.

Conceal diapers! Visible diapers aren’t ideal in photos. Even if a diaper is covered when standing, it might show when sitting or being held. Opt for coordinating diaper covers to keep everything neat and tidy.

Watch out for tucked-in shirts. If a child’s shirt constantly comes untucked, it’s often better to leave it untucked or find a longer shirt to begin with.

Teething baby or toddler? Bring a bib or bandana! Teething can be unpredictable. Instead of fighting it, choose a cute bib or bandana that complements their outfit. Stylish bibs can even add a touch of texture and color to the photos.

Don’t Overlook Footwear!

Consider the photoshoot location when choosing footwear. For mountain or outdoor sessions, closed-toe shoes are recommended for everyone’s safety and comfort.

What About Glasses in Family Photos?

This is a common question! If you regularly wear glasses, then absolutely wear them for your family photos. Experienced photographers have techniques to minimize glare.

However, if you wear transition lenses, it’s advisable to either remove the lenses from an old pair for the session or bring along a pair without transitions. Transition lenses can darken and cause issues during photoshoots.

Do a Family Outfit Test Run

A week or two before your session, have everyone try on their complete outfits and move around at home. Check for any fit issues, bra strap visibility, or shirts coming untucked.

For early spring, late fall, or winter outdoor sessions, a test run outdoors is essential. Wear your planned outfits outside for about twenty minutes, even in your backyard. This helps you gauge warmth and comfort levels realistically, avoiding any surprises on the actual photoshoot day.
