Family Gateway Intake Process Explained

Understanding the intake process at Family Gateway can help you know what to expect when you reach out for help.

Initial Contact and Information Gathering:

When you contact Family Gateway, the first step involves entering your information into the Homeless Management Information System. This includes gathering essential household details such as names, dates of birth, social security numbers, family composition, and race.

Identification and Guardianship Verification:

Family Gateway will request proof of identification and guardianship of minor children during the intake process. It’s important to know that no family will be denied emergency housing due to lack of identification or proof of guardianship. Bring any documentation you have to the intake, and any missing documents can be obtained later, following guidelines set by the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Seeking Alternative Housing Solutions:

Due to the limited shelter space in the community, Family Gateway will explore all possible alternatives to emergency shelter. This includes reaching out to relatives or friends who may be able to provide temporary support. If shelter is absolutely necessary, Family Gateway will work to find placement for your family, either within their organization or at another suitable location.

Homelessness Prevention Focus:

Whenever possible, Family Gateway prioritizes homelessness prevention. Families may be referred to other relevant resources within the organization or the wider community to explore housing options beyond emergency shelter.

Assistance for Domestic Violence Survivors:

For individuals and families fleeing or attempting to flee domestic violence, Family Gateway is committed to ensuring safety. They will connect you with the designated “DV Access Point” organization to access confidential and secure services. If a domestic violence shelter is unavailable, Family Gateway will help find alternative safe options.

Family Gateway is here to support families in Dallas and Collin County through housing crises. Don’t hesitate to reach out for the help you need.
