The Family Health Network (FHN) is set to enhance its healthcare services in Cortland County with the construction of a new medical building in Homer, New York. During a recent Cortland County Planning Board meeting, plans for the impressive over 12,000 square foot facility were reviewed, signaling a significant step forward for healthcare access in the region.
This modern facility will be strategically located behind the existing Family Health Network Administrative and Billing Office at 85 S. West Street (Route 281) in Homer. Patients can look forward to a comprehensive range of services at this new location, including specialized Pediatric and OB/GYN care, as well as same-day acute care access for current Family Health Network patients.
The relocation of the current pediatric services from 24 Groton Ave. to this new, advanced building is anticipated for late Spring 2025, according to FHN. Demonstrating a forward-thinking approach, the Family Health Network has designed the building with future expansion in mind, ensuring it can continue to meet the growing healthcare needs of the community.
Operating hours for the new facility are planned for Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm. Family Health Network is also considering extending hours until 7pm on one or two weekdays and potentially offering Saturday hours from 8am to 12pm to provide greater flexibility for patients seeking care.
The land earmarked for this project, which also houses the Administrative building, was acquired by FHN in 2016. This purchase was part of a strategic initiative to transition away from leased medical spaces and invest in building ownership, demonstrating a long-term commitment to the Cortland County area. Access to the new facility will be conveniently available via Technology Drive, situated between Farm Credit East and the State Police Barracks. Notably, direct driveway access from Route 281 through the administrative building will not be permitted by the New York State DOT due to traffic considerations.
During the County Planning Board review, crucial aspects such as emergency access and flood management were addressed. Fire department accessibility was raised, and Family Health representatives confirmed that the Homer Fire Department had reviewed the plans and raised no concerns regarding fire truck access to the building.
Flood risk was another key point of discussion, particularly concerning the planned retaining walls. To mitigate potential flooding, drainage piping is incorporated into the building plans. Furthermore, the Village of Homer is undertaking an independent study to specifically assess flood control measures for the project.
The Cortland County Planning Board ultimately voted unanimously to forward their recommendations favorably to the Village of Homer Planning Board. The project is expected to be on the agenda for the village’s upcoming meeting on January 24th. Family Health Network anticipates commencing construction of this vital new facility in late Spring of this year, marking an exciting development for healthcare in Homer and surrounding areas.
