It truly excites me when fellow photographers reach out to me to capture their own family memories. There’s something incredibly special about being trusted by another artist to document their family’s story. Even before the photoshoot begins, the connection and shared passion for photography create a warm and enthusiastic atmosphere. I remember one particular session where I was photographing Tonya from 374 Photography and her beautiful family. When it came time to deliver the RAW images (a trade I occasionally do with other photographers), I jokingly apologized for my slightly less-than-perfectly straight shots – thank goodness for Lightroom and the magic of cropping!
Tonya, despite claiming to feel awkward in front of the camera, is a natural. I could honestly photograph her all day! And her entire family? Absolutely stunning. They are truly family goals. It’s even more impressive considering they have four children! Justin, her husband, deserves major props for a last-minute Target run to ensure the kids’ outfits were perfect for the session. Talk about dedication!
To kick things off and help everyone relax, especially the kids, I started the session with some playful interactions. While I’d like to take credit for their ease in front of the lens, the Texas Panhandle weather had other plans. Despite a beautiful start to the day, the temperature dropped quickly, and I’m pretty sure we were all feeling the chill by the end. Typical Texas, right? Sunshine one minute, and the threat of a blizzard the next! Luckily, the predicted five feet of snow didn’t materialize.
But the cold couldn’t dampen the genuine joy and connection this family shared. My absolute favorite part of the session was capturing the kids’ unrestrained laughter as dad tickled them and the tender snuggles between Tonya and her children. These were authentic, unscripted moments of love and happiness. As a family photographer, my goal is to freeze these fleeting moments in time – moments that become even more precious as each day passes.
Tonya and Justin, thank you again for allowing me to photograph your beautiful family. It was such a fun session, and Tonya, it’s always a pleasure to see you!
