Family travel is transformative. Exposing children to new places and cultures broadens their horizons and fosters personal growth in ways you can’t imagine. Having explored the globe with my own family, I’ve witnessed firsthand the incredible impact travel has on kids of all ages. The world is an extraordinary classroom, and the more of it your children experience, the richer their lives will be. If you’re feeling inspired to embark on a family adventure, the exciting question becomes: where should you go?
When we first started traveling as a family, our destination choices were often driven by family visits, weddings, and invitations from friends. We also simply picked places that sparked our interest. While we considered safety and age-appropriateness, we generally believed most of the world was open to us. Along the way, we learned invaluable lessons about family travel and discovered which destinations truly shine for different age groups.
Over the years, I’ve shared insights on the ideal ages for travel in my blog, constantly updating it with our evolving experiences. For pure inspiration, my “Top Spots” lists are a treasure trove of destinations, hotels, and activities we’ve adored worldwide. These resources are designed to ignite your imagination and perhaps introduce you to places you hadn’t previously considered for your family vacations.
Of course, I also document our family adventures extensively on my blog. Whether it’s exploring six Asian countries in three weeks, embarking on a whirlwind around-the-world trip, or letting our kids choose their dream destinations each year, our journeys are filled with stories and photos intended to spark your own family travel dreams, whether those dreams are grand or wonderfully simple.
Finding the Perfect Family Vacation Spot
Despite all these resources, I regularly receive emails from parents asking for destination recommendations tailored to their child’s age. For years, I’ve responded personally, hesitant to write this very post. Why? Because there’s no single “perfect” destination for a specific age. Every child is unique, with their own interests and personality.
The most enriching family vacation, regardless of age, is one that resonates with your child’s passions. Consider what truly excites your child and select a destination that aligns with those interests. Then, make the trip all about them. This personalized approach is the key to unforgettable family travel experiences.
Specific Family Vacation Ideas by Age
However, I understand the desire for concrete ideas. So, here are some destination suggestions categorized by age, keeping in mind that these are just starting points. Every family is different, and you know your children best. Perhaps Paris is perfect for your two-year-old, or your seven-year-old adored India. That’s fantastic! These are simply suggestions based on my family’s experiences, and your insights and alternative ideas are welcome in the comments below.
Top Family Vacation Destinations for Every Age
Ages 0-3: Embrace Flexibility and Explore the World
When traveling with babies and toddlers (ages 0-3), the destination is less crucial than the travel style. Beyond perhaps avoiding adults-only resorts, the world is your oyster! Dreaming of the Great Wall of China, the Pyramids of Egypt, the charming streets of Dubrovnik, or the breathtaking landscapes of Iceland? Go for it! While flights can be challenging with little ones under two, remember that flights are temporary, and the joys of your destination await. The routines of home, like nap times and meal schedules, will travel with you, but young children are remarkably adaptable.
The key at this age is to tailor the trip style to your child’s needs. If long car rides are a struggle, opt for destinations with minimal driving. Museum visits might be shorter for now, but parks and playgrounds become exciting adventures. Focus on a relaxed pace and child-friendly activities, and you can explore almost anywhere.
Naples, Italy: A great place to explore with toddlers, offering delicious food, open piazzas, and a relaxed atmosphere perfect for families with young children.
Age 4: Australia – Down Under Family Fun
Australia is an exceptional destination for families with four-year-olds. The English language makes communication easy, and the country boasts incredible wildlife encounters and unique animal experiences that captivate young minds. Beautiful beaches abound, and if you have a picky eater, you’ll find familiar foods readily available, similar to the US or Europe. Getting around is also a breeze – we’ve always utilized public transportation without renting a car. While climbing the Sydney Harbour Bridge is for older kids (8+), most of Australia’s wonders are accessible and enjoyable for four-year-olds.

Brisbane Hotel Suggestion: The Brisbane Hilton. Central location and budget-friendly.
Age 5: Spain, Italy, and Portugal – European Family Adventures
Italy holds a special place as my favorite country, and we’ve been traveling there with our kids since they were babies. However, Spain and Portugal are equally fantastic and popular with families, and we explored both with our young children. These three countries offer a delightful blend of history, delicious cuisine, walkable cities, and family-friendly outdoor dining. Plus, they all boast beautiful beaches. With kids not yet deeply entrenched in school (or in pre-K or kindergarten), consider traveling during the shoulder seasons of April/May or September/October. You’ll enjoy pleasant weather while avoiding peak tourist crowds.

Rome Hotel Suggestion: Albergo del Senato – overlooking the Pantheon, a truly iconic location.
Venice Hotel Suggestion: Hotel al Ponte Antico – a personal favorite, consider booking two rooms for family comfort.
Cascais Hotel Suggestion: Hotel Baia – loved for its location and views, a solid and enjoyable stay.
Age 6: Costa Rica and Panama – Tropical Biodiversity and Adventure
Costa Rica is a fantastic all-around destination for six-year-olds, offering beaches, incredible wildlife, and exciting activities. Base yourself at a family-friendly resort and venture into national parks to spot monkeys, sloths, and countless other creatures. Panama provides a similar experience, with the added attraction of the Panama Canal, which is fascinating for kids of all ages. Panama tends to be a bit less crowded and more budget-friendly than Costa Rica. Both countries are easily accessible with direct flights from many US cities, making them convenient for family vacations.

Panama Hotel Suggestion: While we haven’t found a truly exceptional hotel in Panama yet, the country itself offers incredible experiences.
Age 7: Scandinavia or Canada – Outdoor Adventures and City Exploration
Seven is the perfect age to immerse children in the great outdoors. Scandinavia, particularly Norway and Sweden, excels in kid-friendly travel with safe, walkable cities and easy access to stunning nature just a short bus, metro, or train ride away. In Oslo, take the T-Bane to Sognsvann for hiking, lakeside barbecues, and swimming in the refreshing (though brisk!) lake. Forests accessible by T-Bane lines offer berry picking in season. In Sweden, fly into Stockholm, take a train to Köping, and then a taxi to Kolarbyn, where you can sleep in a forest hut, canoe to a floating sauna, and cook meals over campfires. Mushroom and berry picking opportunities abound in the surrounding forests, creating a truly magical experience.
Swedish Forest Cabin: Staying in a traditional forest hut in Kolarbyn offers a unique and immersive nature experience that is both educational and fun for families.
If you prefer to stay closer to home (especially if home is the US), Canada offers a similar appeal. Like Scandinavia, Canada boasts incredible outdoor opportunities and cool cities. While parts of the year are cold and dark, June through September are ideal, and Alberta is amazing in winter. From kayaking and hiking to skating and snowshoeing, animal encounters, and vibrant city life, Canada has something for everyone. Primarily English-speaking (except in Quebec), Canada feels familiar yet offers unique cultural experiences. We especially love Manitoba, centrally located and accessible, and Alberta, home to Banff and Lake Louise.

Winnipeg, Manitoba Hotel Suggestion: The Fort Garry Hotel. Perfectly located with spacious suites for families.
Lake Louise, Alberta Hotel Suggestion: The iconic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise – a truly special and memorable place to stay.
Age 8: Antarctica or Japan – Unforgettable and Cultural Journeys
My very first blog post chronicled our family trip to Antarctica with my eight-year-old daughter. It was the perfect age! She was captivated by the animals (penguins, seals, whales), loved playing in the snow and ice, and was engaged throughout the entire expedition. She thrived on the hikes and kayaking excursions and, being lighter than the adults, didn’t sink as much in the snow! Returning with my other daughter at age 12 was equally magical. Many people postpone Antarctica until retirement, but taking your kids, starting around 8-10 years old, is an incredible experience they’ll cherish forever.

However, Antarctica isn’t for everyone. My son, for example, wasn’t interested. Plus, it’s a significant expense. Japan is another excellent option for eight-year-olds. It offers a fascinating cultural immersion, blending ancient temples with modern anime culture – a captivating mix of zen and vibrant energy. My daughter absolutely adored Japan at both seven and eight years old.
Kyoto Cultural Immersion: Exploring the temples and traditional gardens of Kyoto offers a rich cultural experience that is both educational and visually stunning for families.

Tokyo Hotel Suggestion: The Park Hyatt Tokyo is extraordinary. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into Lost in Translation, which was filmed there.
Kyoto Hotel Suggestions: Kyoto Inn Gion is a charming and well-located inn. For a splurge, consider the new Park Hyatt Kyoto.
Age 9: Bali – Tranquility and Cultural Immersion
Both of my daughters chose Bali for their nine-year-old trips, and it’s easy to see why. Bali offers a beautiful blend of beaches and wildlife (the monkey forest is a hit with kids), alongside rich culture, yoga retreats, and a peaceful atmosphere. It’s an ideal transitional destination for kids moving beyond purely “kid-centric” vacations, offering a taste of more sophisticated travel experiences.

Hotel Suggestions: Bali has countless wonderful hotels! In Ubud, Komaneka at Monkey Forest is excellent and within walking distance of town. Tanah Gajah outside of Ubud is also fantastic. Near the beach, our favorite is Kayumanis Jimbaran.
Age 10: African Safari or the Amazon Rainforest – Wildlife Adventures
Our family safari in Tanzania and Kenya when our kids were 5, 8, and 10 was incredible, but we found age 10 to be particularly ideal. While younger children can certainly enjoy safaris, age 10 strikes a sweet spot. There are several recommended vaccinations and medications for African travel, and our five-year-old struggled with malaria pills. Also, longer safari drives are generally easier for older kids to manage and appreciate. Ten is pretty much perfect, but don’t hesitate to take younger children – I know families who have enjoyed safaris with kids of all ages from infancy onwards!
Kenyan Safari Adventure: Witnessing wildlife in their natural habitat during a safari in Maasai Mara, Kenya, is an awe-inspiring and educational experience for families, especially well-suited for 10-year-olds.
If an African safari isn’t in your budget or you prefer a shorter flight, consider Brazil’s Amazon rainforest. It remains my favorite kid-friendly trip ever. I took my daughter at eight, and there were kids on our boat ranging from seven to fourteen. Ten was again a fantastic age. The Amazon offers abundant wildlife, thrilling adventures, and the bonus of being “unplugged” – a welcome break for both kids and adults!

Age 11: Greece – Mythological History and Island Hopping
We’ve been taking our kids to Greece almost every year since they were born. The Greek islands in the summer are simply magical. While Greece is wonderful at any age, if your kids are around 11 and haven’t been yet, now is the perfect time. By this age, they’re likely studying Greek history in school and delving into Greek mythology. A trip to Greece brings these subjects to life in a vibrant and unforgettable way.

Age 12: Paris – Art, Culture, and City Life
Similar to Italy and Greece, we’ve introduced our kids to Paris practically since birth. Paris is wonderful at any age. However, Paris is home to world-class museums, and younger children often have shorter museum attention spans. By age 12, kids are generally more willing to spend a couple of hours exploring a museum, especially with a kid-oriented tour to keep them engaged. Twelve-year-olds also tend to appreciate Paris’s shopping scene more than younger children.
Louvre Museum Family Visit: Taking a break and cooling down at the Louvre Museum in Paris offers a moment of rest during a day of art and cultural exploration.

Hotel Suggestion: Hôtel de Londres Eiffel is a great option – just minutes from Rue Cler market street, the Eiffel Tower, and convenient train and Metro stops. They offer multi-room family setups. Alternatively, we often rent apartments in Paris for more space and flexibility.
Age 13: Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand – Southeast Asian Exploration
Your 13-year-old might still crave beach and animal-focused vacations, or perhaps a Disney cruise with teenage social opportunities. But if they’re open to broader experiences, age 13 is an excellent time for a more culturally immersive trip. Southeast Asia is safe and surprisingly easy to navigate (truly, nothing to be intimidated by), the food is incredible, and there’s an abundance of awe-inspiring historical and cultural sites. Vietnam and Laos remain relatively less touristy, while Cambodia (especially Siem Reap) and Thailand attract more Western visitors.
If you desire beach and resort relaxation alongside temple sightseeing, that’s easily arranged in Southeast Asia, offering a perfect balance for families.

Cambodia Hotel Suggestion: Any of the Shinta Mani hotels in Siem Reap are wonderful: Bensley Collection | Shinta Mani | Shinta Mani Shack.
Thailand Hotel Suggestion: The Peninsula in Bangkok is a personal favorite in Bangkok. For islands, Soneva Kiri on Ko Kood is amazing if your budget allows.
Age 14: India – Cultural Immersion and Historical Wonders
India is one of my favorite destinations, and while you can take kids of any age, it’s undeniably chaotic, and stomach issues are a common concern. It’s also less about beaches and more about pure culture, vibrant colors, and intense adventure. Imagine riding camels through the deserts of Rajasthan, visiting the Taj Mahal at sunrise, exploring ancient desert forts, or taking a boat trip down the Ganges past cremation ceremonies in Varanasi. Attending local festivals and even showing your kids the slums of Mumbai for a stark reality check are all powerful experiences. My son at 10 found India overwhelming, making it perhaps a better destination for teens.
Taj Mahal Sunrise Visit: Experiencing the Taj Mahal before sunrise offers a magical and less crowded view of this iconic monument, creating a memorable cultural moment for families.

Age 15: Patagonia, the Faroe Islands, or Greenland – Adventure Hiking and Wilderness
What do Patagonia, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland have in common? Besides being stunningly beautiful, remote, relatively untouristed, and adventurous, they all offer incredible hiking opportunities. While our kids have always been moderately outdoorsy, long hikes with little legs used to be challenging. As they’ve grown older, hiking has become easier and much more enjoyable for everyone. If you’re seeking serious adventure for your 15-year-old (or even younger, depending on your kids’ abilities), these three destinations are fantastic options to consider.
Patagonian Hiking Trails: Exploring the trails of Chilean Patagonia offers breathtaking mountain scenery and challenging hikes that are perfect for adventurous families with teenagers.

Age 16: The Maldives – Relaxation, Luxury, and Island Paradise
We are huge fans of the Maldives. Six Senses Laamu is our favorite resort worldwide, perfect for honeymooners, couples, and families with children of any age. However, it’s particularly well-suited for kids around seven and up, as they can ride bikes, even on the long jetties leading to overwater villas. I’m listing the Maldives for age 16 because it tends to be 1) expensive and 2) quite far to reach. From California, few places on earth are farther than the Maldives. It’s an ideal destination for a splurge trip at 16, focusing on relaxation, fun water activities, independent exploration, and luxurious pampering.

Remember, these are just suggestions to spark your imagination. The best family vacations are those tailored to your children’s individual interests and passions. Consider what excites them most, and let that guide your destination choice.
Now, share your thoughts in the comments below! Do you disagree with any of these suggestions? What destinations would you recommend for specific ages? Your insights are invaluable!
Health Insurance for Family Travel
A quick but crucial note about health insurance: Despite our extensive family travels, we had never purchased travel or health insurance—until my wife broke her knee while abroad. That experience highlighted the importance of having a policy, and we now have an annual plan through G1G. It’s definitely worth considering, regardless of your family vacation destination.
Travel Points and Miles for Affordable Family Vacations
Many people ask how we afford these incredible trips. One key strategy (almost a travel blogging cliché, but effective!) is traveling inexpensively by leveraging points and miles. If you take just one piece of advice from my website, get a credit card that earns points/miles and charge as much as possible to it. I recommend a card without foreign transaction fees for international travel. These rewards can significantly reduce flight costs, making dream destinations more attainable for families.
