To report suspected abuse or neglect in Texas, it’s crucial to contact the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS). You can reach out to the DFPS to ensure the safety and well-being of individuals at risk.
How to Report Abuse
You can report abuse to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services through two primary methods:
- By Phone: Dial the toll-free Abuse Hotline at 1-800-252-5400. This hotline is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from anywhere in the nation.
- Online: Use the Texas Abuse Hotline website to submit a report. Online reports are reviewed within 24 hours.
Please note that the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services does not accept reports of abuse or neglect via email. This includes submitting any attachments like photos, videos, or audio clips.
Important Updates for Reporting
Anonymous Reporting Policy Change:
As of September 1, 2023, the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services no longer accepts anonymous reports for cases involving children and their families. To file a report, both professional and non-professional reporters are required to provide their first and last name, along with a home or business phone number. Reports must include both a full name and phone number to be accepted by DFPS. Providing only a business, agency, or organizational name is insufficient. Anonymous reports of child abuse and neglect can still be made to local and state law enforcement agencies. It is important to remember that reporter confidentiality is protected by law.
Reporting Abuse in Intermediate Care Facilities (ICF/IID):
Effective March 1, 2024, the process for reporting abuse, neglect, and exploitation within Intermediate Care Facilities for Individuals with an Intellectual Disability or Related Condition (ICF/IID), including State Supported Living Centers (SSLCs), has changed. These reports are now handled by the Health and Human Services (HHS) Complaint and Incident Intake (CII) instead of DFPS. The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services will not investigate these reports.
To report incidents in ICF/IID facilities, contact HHS Complaint and Incident Intake (CII) through:
- Online: Texas Unified Licensure Information Portal (TULIP)
- By Phone: Call 1-800-458-9858.
By following these guidelines, you can effectively report abuse and neglect to the appropriate Texas authorities, ensuring the safety and protection of vulnerable individuals.
