Disenrollment and Minimum Enrollment Periods
Disenrolling from the TRICARE Dental Program is possible by submitting a new TRICARE Dental Program Enrollment/Change Authorization Form. The termination date of your family’s coverage depends on when the form is received. Disenrollment may also be possible through the Beneficiary Web Enrollment website, offering added convenience.
To ensure program stability and benefit availability, there is a minimum enrollment period. Enrollment in the TRICARE Dental Program requires a minimum commitment of 12 months.
- The sponsor must have at least 12 months remaining on their service commitment to be eligible for enrollment.
- Completing the initial 12-month enrollment period is mandatory unless a valid reason for early termination exists.
- After fulfilling the initial 12-month period, your family’s dental coverage can continue on a flexible month-to-month basis.
For detailed information regarding exceptions to the minimum enrollment period, please refer to the TRICARE Dental Program Handbook.
Choosing the Right Plan for Your Family
The TDP offers two plan options to suit different family needs and sizes:
- Single Plan: Designed for coverage for one person.
- Family Plan: Provides dental coverage for two or more family members, maximizing benefits for larger families.
If you opt for a family plan, enrollment rules apply to ensure comprehensive coverage for all eligible members. Generally, all eligible family members must be enrolled under a family plan, with a few specific exceptions:
- Children under the age of one year are automatically added to the family plan upon turning one year old.
- Family members residing in two or more separate locations may have different coverage considerations.
- Family members requiring specialized medical attention in a hospital or treatment center may have specific enrollment adjustments (documentation required).
Enrollment for Guard/Reserve members operates slightly differently due to the fluctuating nature of military status. Sponsors and family members enroll separately, and premiums are also handled separately.
- Sponsors and family members enroll independently and pay separate premium payments.
- Sponsors are limited to selecting a single plan for their coverage.
- Family members have the flexibility to enroll under either a single or a family plan, depending on their needs.
- Importantly, the sponsor is not required to have a dental plan for family members to enroll, providing flexibility for family dental care decisions.
Does your service member require an annual dental exam for dental readiness? TRICARE Dental Program network dentists are authorized to complete the dental exam form (DD 2813) at no cost to you, supporting military readiness. >>Learn More about dental forms and readiness exams.
