The Inception of Ronald McDonald Family Rooms: Aiding NYC Families
In 2012, Ronald McDonald House New York recognized an increasing need to broaden its circle of care, extending the compassionate support offered at their Upper East Side House to families across all five boroughs of NYC. This vision sparked the creation of a dedicated hospital outreach program, strategically designed to facilitate the expansion of Ronald McDonald House programs and services directly into hospital environments.
By 2015, after establishing strong collaborative partnerships with eight prominent hospital systems across the city, Ronald McDonald House New York marked a significant milestone. In the spring of 2016, they inaugurated the very first Ronald McDonald Family Room at NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County in Brooklyn.
Located within Kings County Hospital, the Ronald McDonald Family Room serves as a peaceful haven for caregivers of children receiving care in the NICU and pediatric units. This dedicated space is thoughtfully equipped with essential amenities, including a fully functional kitchen, laundry machines, comfortable lounge areas, providing caregivers with a much-needed place to unwind and recharge, just moments away from their child’s bedside.
Building upon this success, RMH-NY expanded its reach further into Queens by opening a second family room at NYC Health + Hospitals/Elmhurst.
Today, both the Ronald McDonald Family Rooms at Kings County and Elmhurst are vibrant and thriving, playing a crucial role in promoting health equity within their communities. They extend essential hospitality services to caregivers, ensuring they have the support they need while their children undergo medical treatment. Looking ahead, Ronald McDonald House New York holds ambitious plans for the continued growth and expansion of their family room outreach initiative, aiming to serve even more families in need.
