When traveling to Maui with kids, the areas of Wailea (south shore) and Ka’anapali (west shore) are generally the most popular choices. Both boast fantastic weather and a wide selection of accommodations.
However, for those seeking a less conventional experience, Maui is brimming with hidden gems and charming locales waiting to be explored. My Ultimate Guide to Maui delves into each region in detail, helping you pinpoint the perfect location for your family’s needs and preferences.
Hotels vs. Vacation Rentals: Which is Best for Your Family in Maui?

Alt text: Toddler playing ukulele at Four Seasons Resort Maui, highlighting luxury family hotels in Maui Hawaii.
The primary factor in this decision often boils down to budget. Let’s be honest, hotel stays in Maui can be pricey. If you love the hotel experience but are mindful of expenses, Oahu hotel options often present more budget-friendly alternatives.
According to the Hawaii Tourism Authority, hotel guests in Maui typically spend almost 20% more than those opting for vacation rentals. Beyond the base rate, many Maui hotels also impose resort and parking fees (ranging from $40-$50 per day), which can significantly increase your overall cost.
Despite the higher price point, resorts remain a favored choice for families. They offer irresistible conveniences such as kids’ clubs, on-site restaurants, thrilling water slides, kids-eat-free programs, and daily housekeeping – a huge plus for busy parents! If your budget allows, a resort stay can truly elevate your family vacation.
Maui Vacation Rentals for Families
Alt text: Father and toddler on vacation rental lanai in Maui, spacious family vacation rentals in Maui Hawaii.
While vacation rentals may not offer the same level of amenities as a full-service resort, they provide a different kind of luxury: freedom and space. Having a kitchen and laundry facilities can be invaluable, especially when traveling with larger families or picky eaters.
Vacation rentals often provide something moms crave: SPACE. While some hotels on this list offer suites, they often can’t match the generous square footage of vacation rentals. I sometimes book vacation rentals simply for the luxury of separate bedrooms after the kids are asleep!
For a blend of both worlds, consider resort-style condos in Maui, such as Honua Kai Resort in Ka’anapali.

Alt text: Expansive pool complex at Westin Maui Resort, showcasing family-friendly pools and water features in Maui Hawaii.
Location: Ka’anapali, Maui
Perfect For: Families With Toddlers
The Westin Maui Resort and Spa in Ka’anapali is an excellent choice for young families seeking a vibrant, beachfront experience. Its prime location on Ka’anapali Beach, recognized as one of the best kid-friendly beaches on Maui, is a major draw.
The Westin Maui is particularly celebrated for its impressive aquatic playground, boasting five pools, two thrilling water slides, and a dedicated kids’ area. They offer a fantastic toddler-friendly zone, and for older children, a 128-foot waterslide promises exhilarating fun!
Why We Love It:
The Westin’s location is incredibly convenient. Situated on the widest stretch of Ka’anapali Beach and directly adjacent to Whaler’s Village Shopping Mall, everything you need is within easy reach.
The Westin Ka’anapali recently introduced “Social Space,” an indoor entertainment venue that offers arcade games, golf simulators, duckpin bowling, and a menu of food, local beers, and craft cocktails. It’s a great family-friendly spot that transitions into an adults-only (21+) space later in the evening.
Cons:
With 770 rooms, The Westin Maui Resort is a large property that can feel crowded, especially during peak seasons. If you prefer a quieter, more intimate setting, this might not be the ideal choice.
While the pool layout is well-designed with five different levels overlooking the ocean, the pool areas can still get quite busy. Be prepared for energetic kids and plan to arrive early to secure your pool chairs.
Pools: 5, including a 128-foot waterslide and 87,000 square feet of aquatic fun
Kid’s Club: No
Restaurants: 3, including an “Eat Well” menu with healthy kids’ options

Location: Ka’anapali, Maui
Perfect For: Families With Teens
The Hyatt Regency, nestled along the beautiful Ka’anapali Beach, is a dream for families seeking a harmonious blend of exciting activities and relaxing beachfront vistas. From a lazy river and cascading waterfalls to a thrilling 150-foot waterslide, there’s no shortage of entertainment here.
The Hyatt stands out with its unique wildlife attractions, including African Black-Footed Penguins and exotic birds. The elaborate pool area features a lazy river, waterfalls, and a 150-foot lava tube waterslide! While the beach directly in front of the hotel is small, a short stroll along Ka’anapali Beach leads to more expansive sands.
Although their kids’ club is currently unavailable, they offer a variety of family-friendly activities such as stargazing and a mermaid swim academy.
Why We Love It:
The resort’s suites provide the luxury of separate living spaces, ideal for families with teenagers (or napping toddlers!). This lively resort offers numerous on-site activities and is perfect for older kids who appreciate some independence. A short walk along the beach path provides access to a variety of dining and entertainment options. We consistently enjoy our stays here!
Cons:
Due to its size and popularity, the Hyatt Regency can get quite busy, especially around the pool area. If you’re seeking a more tranquil or intimate experience, this might not be the best fit.
Additionally, the beach directly in front of the hotel is on the smaller side. And while the wildlife features are unique, they may not appeal to all guests.

Kid’s Club: No
Restaurants: 5, including Ululani’s Shave Ice (arguably the best shave ice in Maui!)
The Grand Wailea
Alt text: Father and son in Aloha shirts at Grand Wailea, showcasing luxury family resorts in Wailea Maui Hawaii.
Location: Wailea, Maui
Perfect For: Families With Kids of Multiple Ages
The Grand Wailea, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, is celebrated for its opulent amenities and extensive family-friendly offerings.
Located directly on Wailea Beach, this resort is perfect for families seeking a blend of luxury and adventure. Spanning 40 acres of tropical gardens, it also hosts a fantastic kid-friendly luau. For years, people from around the globe have chosen this resort for weddings at its charming stained-glass Seaside Chapel.
The Grand Wailea is most famous for its sprawling activity pool complex, featuring nine pools connected by a lazy river. It offers exhilarating waterslides for teens and a gentle sandy beach pool for toddlers.
Did I mention the Tarzan pool with a rope swing? Or perhaps the swim-up bar?
Why We Love It:
This is my top recommendation for families with children of varying ages because it truly offers something for everyone. The massive pool setup is truly impressive. Furthermore, the grounds are stunning and located right on Wailea Beach, providing seamless access between the pool and the beach.
The Kilolani Spa is my favorite on the island and underwent a significant renovation in 2024. I’ve enjoyed many wonderful massages here, and the new “hydrotherapy garden” is a must-try! I often bring friends here for birthday celebrations, followed by an incredible dinner at Humu Humu (sit at the bar for a date night – it’s filled with live fish!).
Cons:
Unfortunately, the Grand Wailea also discontinued its kids’ club, which was a real disappointment as it was exceptional. However, it’s clear that the resort still caters extensively to children.
I find it a bit unusual that you have to walk through the adults-only pool to reach the family-friendly pools, but as someone usually surrounded by kids, who am I to complain?
Pools: 9, including 5 waterslides and 3 jacuzzis
Kid’s Club: No

Fairmont Kea Lani
A cabana by the pool at sunset at the Fairmont Kea Lani in Maui, Hawaii.
Alt text: Sunset view of cabana at Fairmont Kea Lani pool, highlighting luxury family accommodations in Maui Hawaii.
Location: Wailea, Maui
Perfect For: Families Who Appreciate Space
The Fairmont Kea Lani is a Maui institution, and its enduring popularity is easy to understand.
This resort distinguishes itself with its unique all-suite and villa luxury accommodations, providing generous space for both children and parents. The atmosphere at Fairmont Kea Lani is relaxed yet refined, offering a seamless blend of comfort and sophistication.
The resort features three swimming pools, including a 140-foot waterslide and a toddler-friendly pool. Its Wailea location also means you’re just steps away from some of Maui’s most stunning beaches and snorkeling destinations.
Why We Love It:
I adore the Fairmont Kea Lani for numerous reasons, but the primary one is SPACE. Every room is either a one-bedroom suite or a two-to-three-bedroom villa, making it easy to accommodate napping toddlers and still enjoy adult time in a separate room after bedtime.
As with most Fairmont properties, the resort is visually stunning, especially after its recent 2024 renovation. The service at the Fairmont has consistently been exceptional, and I appreciate the thoughtful details, like the small step stools provided for children throughout the hotel.
They also offer an impressive array of cultural activities and host numerous community-focused events throughout the year.
Cons:
Fairmont Kea Lani is situated at the southernmost point of Wailea, somewhat separated from other hotels. This can be a plus for those seeking tranquility, but it does mean a longer walk to nearby shops and restaurants.
While the kids’ wading pool is excellent, there are no poolside play structures for toddlers. And, a significant drawback for families, they recently discontinued their complimentary kids’ club, a trend seen at several Maui resorts.
Pools: 3 kid-friendly pools and one adult-only pool
Kids Club: No
Restaurants: 6, Kids under 5 eat free at Ko Restaurant and AMA Bar & Grill
Four Seasons Resort
Alt text: Family pool with organized towels at Four Seasons Maui, showcasing luxury amenities at family resorts in Maui Hawaii.
Location: Wailea, Maui
Perfect For: Families Looking for Ultimate Luxury
The Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea epitomizes elegance and delivers a truly luxurious escape. If you envision a vacation defined by serene sophistication, this is your destination.
The Four Seasons is world-renowned for its impeccable service and meticulous attention to detail, ensuring a stay that is both relaxing and unforgettable. The resort’s three saltwater pools, including a tranquil adults-only option and a beautiful family pool, cater to every mood and preference.
Many consider this the finest hotel in Wailea, and perhaps even on the entire island.
Why We Love It:
This is genuinely one of my favorite hotels I’ve ever experienced, and I don’t say that lightly. On vacation, I want to feel completely removed from everyday life. The Four Seasons achieves this by treating every guest like a VIP, from arrival to departure and beyond. This is the kind of place where staff remembers your name, and your family’s needs are often anticipated before you even realize them.
The grounds are breathtaking, and our room included thoughtful amenities like kids’ shampoo, a diaper genie, a Nespresso machine, a crib, and nightly turndown service. They also offer bottle warmers, rocking chairs, and strollers upon request.
A major perk of the Four Seasons Maui is their transparent pricing – while undeniably luxurious, they don’t charge for many “extras” common at other Hawaiian resorts (no resort fee!). Complimentary pool cabanas are also included (a rare and valuable amenity!), eliminating the need to leave the poolside with a sleeping baby or toddler. They even provided a crib in our cabana! For families with young children, this alone might be reason enough to choose the Four Seasons.
Furthermore, they have an exceptional complimentary kids’ club for ages 5-12. Combine this with a massive game room and restaurants where kids 5 and under eat free, and it becomes clear that high-end hotel stays can indeed be family-friendly.
Cons:
The Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea comes with a price tag that reflects its luxury, which can be a significant budget consideration. Also, while the resort is wonderfully peaceful, those seeking a more bustling, activity-filled vacation might find it too serene. I wouldn’t recommend it for families with very active teenagers.
Lastly, while the spa was beautiful, my massage felt somewhat rushed and impersonal. I’ve heard similar feedback from other guests. (You might consider spa treatments next door at the Grand Wailea.)
Pools: 3, including a serene adults-only pool and a family pool with a small waterslide and shallow end for toddlers
Kid’s Club: Yes, complimentary for ages 5-12
Restaurants: 3, kids five and under eat free
Napili Kai Beach Resort
Alt text: Father and baby relaxing at Napili Kai Beach Resort, showcasing low-key family beach resorts in Maui Hawaii.
Location: Napili, Maui
Perfect For: Families Seeking a Relaxed Beach Retreat
This is our preferred getaway for a casual weekend in Maui. Napili Kai Resort is a hidden gem for families seeking a more laid-back, intimate Hawaiian experience.
Tucked away on the shores of picturesque Napili Bay, this resort feels like stepping back in time. Napili Kai’s charm lies in its traditional Hawaiian ambiance and smaller scale, a refreshing contrast to the larger, more bustling resorts. Its beachfront location provides direct access to the calm, clear waters of Napili Bay, an ideal beach for children.
Why We Love It:
Napili Kai’s appeal is its simplicity and focus on relaxation. The spacious, condo-style accommodations with kitchen facilities make it perfect for a convenient, home-away-from-home stay. The resort’s low-rise buildings and absence of resort fees add to its laid-back charm. Their motto is: “We don’t nickel and dime our guests.”
This resort is charmingly quirky, with a weekly mai tai party, shuffleboard, putt-putt golf, complimentary popcorn, and authentic hula performances by local children. In a sea of large resorts, I find this spot to be intimate and wonderfully refreshing.
Cons:
While Napili Kai offers a peaceful retreat, the décor is a bit dated, and it lacks some of the extensive amenities and activities found at larger resorts, which might be a drawback if you’re seeking a more luxurious or action-packed vacation. While we’ve consistently found the service excellent, poolside or room service is not available.
Tip: Explore their “family reunion” package if you’re traveling with a large group!
Pools: 4
Kid’s Club: Complimentary and Seasonal (available mid-June to late August, Thanksgiving, and Christmas/New Year’s)
Restaurants: 1, The Sea House Restaurant, known for its beachfront dining and local cuisine
Montage Kapalua Bay
Alt text: Boy eating fries in cabana at Montage Kapalua Bay, showcasing luxury and spacious family resorts in Maui Hawaii.
Location: Kapalua, Maui
Perfect For: Families Desiring Luxury and Spacious Living
Montage Kapalua Bay, located in the upscale Kapalua area, is the epitome of luxury and comfort for families who appreciate the finer things in life.
This resort is renowned for its sprawling, residential-style accommodations and breathtaking Pacific Ocean views. This isn’t the kind of resort where you feel crowded by other guests. Montage offers stunning grounds and spacious 1-4 bedroom suites and residences, each featuring top-tier amenities AND a gourmet kitchen.
Why We Love It:
No other luxury resort can compete with the Montage’s spacious accommodations, which include separate living and dining rooms, full gourmet kitchens, soaking tubs, and separate showers. It’s rare to find this level of luxury combined with such family-friendly amenities.
The Spa Montage is reason enough to stay here, and you don’t need to be a guest to indulge in their treatments. They offer a range of therapies that truly embody the spirit of aloha, and a visit is highly recommended if your budget allows!
Their kids’ program, Paintbox, is among the best on the island, with customized activities for different days of the week. They even offer a “children’s night out” twice weekly, including dinner and a private movie screening.
Cons:
Montage Kapalua Bay’s exclusivity and high-end offerings come with a premium price. Additionally, its tranquil and luxurious atmosphere might not be ideal for families seeking a more casual or activity-packed resort experience. Let’s just say, when my kids were being loud, people noticed.
Pools: A stunning 3-tiered lagoon pool
Kid’s Club: Paintbox, an exclusive children’s program with a variety of cultural activities
Restaurants: 3 (The Hideaway is the most kid-friendly!)
Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa at Black Rock

Alt text: Toddler on waterslide at Sheraton Maui Resort, showcasing family-friendly pool features at resorts in Ka’anapali Maui Hawaii.
Location: Ka’anapali
Perfect For: Families Who Love Adventure and History
The Sheraton Maui is a sprawling 23-acre resort situated at the iconic Black Rock on Ka’anapali Beach, perfect for families seeking a blend of Hawaiian culture, adventure, and relaxation.
This resort is rich in history and legend, located at a site significant in Hawaiian culture and offering excellent snorkeling right off the beach. The Sheraton Maui is famous for its giant lagoon-style pool and the nightly cliff diving ceremony, a tradition that honors the island’s heritage.
You are almost guaranteed a stunning oceanfront view from nearly every room, a rare find!
Why We Love It:
Beyond its rich cultural setting, the real highlight of the Sheraton is the lazy river pool, stretching 142 yards (the length of a football field!) throughout the hotel grounds. There are several large swimming areas, a small waterslide, and a shallow area ideal for toddlers.
Sheraton’s prices are also fairly reasonable, by Maui standards.
Cons:
The Sheraton Maui is bustling, especially during peak seasons, which may not suit those seeking a quieter, more secluded experience. Opinions on the resort’s size are divided – some love it, others find it overwhelming. Personally, the extra walking to navigate the grounds felt tiring whenever I needed to return to our room.
Pools: A sizeable lagoon-style pool with a lazy river and separate areas for kids
Kid’s Club: No
Restaurants: 5
Outrigger Ka’anapali Beach Resort
A baby sleeping on a blanket on Ka'anapali Beach in front of Outrigger Ka'anapali Beach Resort in Maui, Hawaii.
Alt text: Baby sleeping on Ka’anapali Beach near Outrigger Resort, showcasing beachfront family resorts in Maui Hawaii for budget-conscious travelers.
Location: Ka’anapali, Maui
Perfect For: Families on a Budget
Outrigger Ka’anapali Beach Resort is a fantastic option for budget-conscious families who still want a beachfront location. This resort is celebrated for its prime spot on Ka’anapali Beach, offering direct access to soft sand and clear waters. Staying here also provides easy access to a variety of dining and shopping options.
The Outrigger’s atmosphere is warm and welcoming, emphasizing genuine Hawaiian hospitality. It claims to be “Hawaii’s most Hawaiian hotel” and offers an impressive schedule of daily cultural activities.
Why We Love It:
Simply put – this place has old-school charm. Staying here feels like a step back in time, which can be quite appealing. A major remodel in 2023 gave the resort a nice facelift and added an on-site Maui Brewing Company, which made our family’s list of the best kid-friendly restaurants on Maui.
Overall, I highly recommend this option for families on a budget who want to stay on Ka’anapali Beach without overspending.
Cons:
While part of its charm, it’s evident that this is an older hotel. The décor is somewhat dated, although the rooms are clean and welcoming. Amenities are limited, and the whale-shaped pool is quite basic. If features like a toddler play area and water slides are important for your vacation, this might not be the right choice.
Pools: A unique, no-frills, whale-shaped pool
Kid’s Club: No
Restaurants: 3, including the newest Maui Brewing Company location
Book Outrigger Ka’anapali Beach Resort
Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club
Alt text: Toddler on waterslide at Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club, showcasing family-friendly pools and amenities at resorts in Maui Hawaii.
Location: Ka’anapali, Maui
Perfect For: Families Who Want the Comfort of Home
Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club, located in the heart of Ka’anapali Beach, is a vacation ownership property that is also available for standard bookings.
The booking process can be a bit confusing as the property is divided into “Lahaina and Napili Towers” or “Molokai, Maui, and Lanai Towers.” I always recommend the Lahaina and Napili Towers for families, as the villas are incredibly spacious and include a full kitchen and washer and dryer!
Maui Ocean Club offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and easy access to Ka’anapali Beach. The resort boasts an expansive super pool complex with a pirate ship, water slides, and a lazy river!
Why We Love It:
My two-year-old absolutely loved the pirate ship play area and the small water slides. I appreciated having a washer and dryer in our villa and the convenience of bathing both kids in the large bathtub at the end of the day was a huge bonus. The on-site amenities make this a very convenient place, especially with a toddler in tow.
Additionally, Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club does not charge a daily resort fee, which is rare in Hawaii (though parking fees still apply).
Cons:
Being a vacation ownership property, there are a couple of quirks. Check-in is at 4:00 pm, and check-out is at 10:00 am. While the staff is friendly, the service may not be as personalized as at a traditional luxury resort.
Also, this is not a quiet, relaxing resort. While the pool area is incredibly fun, it can get very crowded.
Pools: An impressive super pool complex with a pirate ship, water slides, and a lazy river
Kid’s Club: No
Restaurants: One beachfront restaurant (Longhi’s) and two pool bars
Honua Kai Resort
Alt text: Sun hat on poolside chair at Honua Kai Resort, showcasing spacious family condos at resorts in Maui Hawaii.
Location: Ka’anapali, Maui
Perfect For: Large Families and Group Travel
Honua Kai Resort is a fantastic condo-style resort option for families needing extra space—especially when traveling with extended family or a large group. Located on the quieter northern end of Ka’anapali Beach, Honua Kai offers spacious accommodations with fully equipped kitchens, in-room laundry, and all the comforts of home.
With multiple pools (including a fun kids’ pool with a lazy river), water slides, and a beachfront setting, this resort strikes a perfect balance between a family vacation and a relaxing escape.
Why We Love It:
I’m a big fan of the full kitchens here, especially when traveling with young children. Having the option to prepare some meals in your room can be a lifesaver with picky eaters. The resort is family-friendly without feeling overly “resorty,” and the beach is just steps away. Honua Kai offers the conveniences of a hotel with the spaciousness of a vacation rental.
Duke’s restaurant on-site is also a major highlight, particularly with its beachfront seating – perfect for family dinners while the kids play in the sand.
Cons:
While the resort offers ample space and amenities, it does not provide room service or a traditional kids’ club. Also, it’s located on the quieter side of Ka’anapali Beach, so if you’re looking for more action, you might prefer staying closer to the main Ka’anapali strip.
Pools: 4 pools, including a lazy river, children’s play area, and water slides
Kid’s Club: No
Restaurants: 2, including Duke’s Beach House
