1. Piney Woods Getaway Cabins, Larue, TX (East Texas)
For an East Texas adventure, Piney Woods Getaway Cabins in Larue, TX, is an excellent choice. My family and I recently visited and had an amazing time exploring the natural beauty of the area. East Texas is known for its lush forests and scenic hiking trails, making it an ideal destination for families who love the outdoors. While the stunning scenery is perfect for capturing in personalized photo calendars to remember your trip, we were also seeking a bit of adventure. 3. Best Day Ever Ranch (BDER), Whitewright, TX
Best Day Ever Ranch in Whitewright, TX, is a fantastic family getaway destination that offers a unique and memorable experience. During our visit a few years ago, we were impressed by the newly updated and charming cabins. While some cabins feature cozy lofts accessed by steep stairs, other options are available for those preferring easier access. My personal highlight was enjoying a peaceful morning coffee on the porch, serenaded by the sounds of country music from a neighbor – it felt truly idyllic. If you have the opportunity, be sure to ask about the treehouse cabin; the bathtub alone is worth the experience!
A fun perk at BDER is the inclusion of a golf cart with each rental – perfect for exploring the ranch grounds (though, no golf clubs or courses are on-site!). However, the real treat for many guests is the outdoor shower available with most cabins – a truly refreshing and unique amenity. BDER also boasts an event center, ideal for weddings, and a beautiful outdoor gazebo, creating a versatile venue for various occasions. With ample space to roam and explore, Best Day Ever Ranch is a place you’ll want to learn more about. We’re already planning our return trip for another relaxing weekend! BDER’s proximity to Dallas makes it a quick and easy weekend escape that the whole family will adore.
4. Getaway Tiny Cabins – Navasota, TX
Another excellent option for “family getaways near me” is Getaway Tiny Cabins in Navasota, TX. Located near Houston, Navasota is still a convenient drive from Dallas, offering a different landscape to explore.
It’s important to remember that these cabins are indeed tiny, but that’s part of their charm! The focus is on immersing yourself in nature, and Getaway Cabins strategically places their locations to maximize the surrounding natural beauty. Beyond Navasota and the Larue location mentioned earlier, Getaway Cabins also has locations near Austin and San Antonio, as well as in other parts of the US, including the East and West Coasts.

5. Luxurious Staycation at Gaylord Texan Resort
For a truly indulgent “family getaway near me,” consider a staycation at the Gaylord Texan Resort in Grapevine, TX. As a personal favorite, the Gaylord Texan offers a world-class resort experience right in the DFW area. I recently had the pleasure of staying overnight and experiencing their Summerfest activities and the Paradise Springs water park. To make it even more special, I invited a couple of girlfriends to join me for a birthday celebration. During our stay, we encountered many Texas families also enjoying the resort, and I wished I had brought my own child along!
The Gaylord Texan’s Summerfest, an annual summer event, is packed with fun for all ages. The themes and activities change each year, but past events have included bingo, canvas painting, and much more. Of course, we also made sure to spend time at the fantastic outdoor resort pool. We were amazed at how many activities we could fit into our short stay, creating cherished memories.
The Gaylord Texan is conveniently located just minutes from both Dallas and Fort Worth, making it an ideal staycation recommendation for families seeking luxury and entertainment close to home.
6. Frisco, TX: Entertainment and City Fun

7. Dinosaur Valley State Park, Glen Rose, TX
Step back in time at Dinosaur Valley State Park in Glen Rose, TX. This state park is perfect for a day trip or a weekend of outdoor adventure, featuring hiking trails, picnic areas, playgrounds, geocaching, and, most famously, real dinosaur tracks! Dinosaur Valley State Park is one of the best day trips we’ve taken with kids. Camping at the park for a weekend getaway would also be a fantastic experience. If you have extra time, consider visiting the nearby Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, a drive-through wildlife park that’s a hit with both young and older children. Remember that the dinosaur tracks are most visible when water levels are low. The park also has a store where you can purchase supplies, snacks, and souvenirs.

8. Oklahoma City, OK – A Quick Trip to a Neighboring State
Venture just three hours north on Interstate 35 N and you’ll find yourself in Oklahoma City, OK, another great option for “family getaways near me.” Oklahoma City’s Bricktown district and other prominent areas offer a variety of attractions and activities for tourists. Last year, my son and I enjoyed a hosted trip to OKC and had a blast exploring the city. Our itinerary, provided by Visit OKC, kept us busy every minute, as we tried to experience as much as possible. Highlights included the playful purple penguin decorations at our hotel and the thrilling white-water rapids ride – which was a bit scary for me but a huge hit with my son! Cabins at Lake Texoma Lighthouse Resort
9. Lake Texoma – Lakeside Relaxation
Lake Texoma, less than two hours from DFW, has been a popular destination for years, and it’s easy to see why. A friend and her family recently rented a cabin at Lake Texoma from Lighthouse Marina, seeking a quick weekend escape after being homebound for too long. Lake Texoma is known for its excellent fishing opportunities. My friend Esther mentioned that their rented cabin included a full kitchen, bathroom, cable TV, and AC. While they also rented a boat and enjoyed their time, she indicated they might explore other options for future visits, but the lake itself remains a draw.
Kayaks at Carlton Landing on Lake Eufaula
10. Carlton Landing on Lake Eufaula
Carlton Landing on Lake Eufaula is another fantastic lakeside destination, located just under 3 hours from Dallas via Hwy 75. We had the pleasure of visiting Carlton Landing in 2015, enjoying a complimentary two-night stay in a rental. Lake Eufaula offers beautiful scenery and a relaxing atmosphere perfect for a family getaway.
11. Broken Bow Cabins, OK – Luxury in Nature
For a slightly longer drive, but well worth it, consider Broken Bow, Oklahoma. While a bit further at around 4 hours from DFW, Broken Bow is gaining popularity for its stunning rental cabins. I had seen glimpses of some gorgeous cabins on Instagram and remembered my niece visiting last October. She and her family had an amazing time and highly recommended it, eager to return. So, while Broken Bow isn’t quite a “quick family weekend getaway near DFW,” it’s close enough to be included and offers a truly special experience.
Update: My niece did go back to Broken Bow, and so did I! I took my mom for a mother-daughter getaway – read about our trip: A road trip to Broken Bow
For those seeking a luxurious cabin experience in nature, Broken Bow is an excellent choice. Many properties boast hot tubs, full kitchens, and spacious dining areas, perfect for family gatherings. The wineries in the Broken Bow area also offer a delightful afternoon activity for adults.
12. Turner Falls Park, Davis, OK
Turner Falls Park in Davis, OK, is incredibly close – only an hour’s drive from my home! I’m almost embarrassed it took me so long to revisit. My last trip was during my Boy Scout days, which involved tent camping (not my favorite!), but my son and his friends loved it. Turner Falls Park is a beautiful natural area with a stunning waterfall and swimming areas.
