Cherished Family Recipes: Baking Through Generations

Baking is more than just making food; it’s about creating memories and traditions. In my family, baking has been a cherished practice passed down through generations. Sharing these Family Recipes is like sharing a piece of our history and hearts. While many ancestral recipes have been lost over time, a precious few have survived, finding their way into my hands. These aren’t just recipes; they are stories, whispered secrets from the past that I deeply treasure.

Growing up, I didn’t learn these recipes directly from my mom or Grandma Berkowitz. The baking gene seemed to skip a generation or two in our family line. Fortunately, before my grandma passed away, she lovingly wrote down some of these family recipes for me. They had been shared verbally, mother to daughter, for generations, and without her foresight, they might have vanished forever. I am eternally grateful to possess these recipes, each carrying layers of history and boundless love. When I had the opportunity to bake these family recipes with my mom on television, the experience was profoundly moving, even more so than I had imagined. That episode is now a memory I will always hold dear.

To make the experience even richer, Mom and I had the pleasure of meeting and baking alongside Morgan, her mother Nina, and her grandmother, Doodles. This incredible trio, spanning three generations, welcomed us into their family home and shared their glorious challah recipe. The warmth, joy, and love that filled their kitchen were as delicious as the challah itself! My mom and I instantly felt like part of their family. They generously shared their stories and even some of their time-honored tricks for braiding the perfect loaf.

So many viewers reached out, eager to recreate my mom’s incredibly simple yet comforting chicken soup recipe. Because of this overwhelming request, she decided to share it. And for those who aren’t able to visit Minneapolis and experience Morgan’s sensational challah firsthand, we’ve also shared a family recipe that you can bake in your own kitchen.
