Holiday Family Spotlight: The Hogan Family and Hope for HIE

Holiday Family Spotlight: The Hogan Family and Hope for HIE

We are constantly moved by the remarkable families within our community who not only bravely face their own journeys but also generously share their experiences, support, and compassion to uplift others.

The Hogan Family, comprising Jordan, Kayla, Mara, and Mila Hogan, exemplifies this spirit perfectly. They chose Hope for HIE as their cause for this year’s My Cause My Cleats initiative, showcasing the incredible power of community and connection. Their dedication to raising awareness and giving back beautifully reflects the essence of Hope for HIE – a powerful reminder that every story and every journey can truly make a difference.

What inspired you to choose Hope for HIE for the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats initiative?

My Cause My Cleats, an NFL initiative held each December, allows players and coaches to wear custom cleats during games to champion causes close to their hearts. It’s a fantastic platform to elevate awareness for charities and issues they are passionate about. We chose to represent Hope for HIE because of our daughter, Mila, who received an HIE diagnosis at birth.

Could you share your family’s connection to Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE)?

Before Mila’s arrival, HIE was completely unknown to us. Kayla’s pregnancy progressed normally, and labor seemed typical until the very end. After prolonged pushing and several unsuccessful suction attempts to deliver Mila, an emergency C-section was deemed necessary. Tragically, en route to the operating room, Mila’s umbilical cord prolapsed, leading to oxygen deprivation. I was able to deliver her using forceps on the operating table, which likely saved crucial time. Mila was then transferred to a specialized neonatal hospital and received 72 hours of therapeutic cooling. We are incredibly fortunate that Mila experienced no permanent brain damage, a reality we know is not always the case, and we are immensely proud to be her parents.

What does spreading awareness for HIE and Hope for HIE mean to your family?

Raising awareness for HIE and supporting Hope for HIE is profoundly meaningful to us. It’s about standing in solidarity with families and individuals navigating an incredibly complex and often misunderstood journey. For us, it extends beyond the medical aspects of HIE to encompass the emotional, social, and developmental challenges that accompany it.

Hope for HIE is truly a lifeline. They unite families, share stories of resilience, and provide invaluable resources. They are also driving progress in HIE treatment and research, which is vital. Our aim is to ensure that those affected by HIE feel seen, supported, and know they are not alone. It’s about empowering them with the tools, information, and community needed not just to cope with challenges but to truly thrive.

How has the Hope for HIE community impacted your journey and approach to advocacy?

When Mila was diagnosed, the long-term effects were uncertain, and she underwent various therapies for over a year. It was a completely new world for us, with a multitude of therapies and options, making it overwhelming to know where to begin. Connecting with others during this time was paramount. Joining a community like Hope for HIE provided a sense of solidarity. Connecting with families who understood the unique challenges of HIE was incredibly helpful and made us feel less isolated.

Could you share a cherished family memory or milestone from your HIE journey?

One of the most significant lessons we’ve learned is that every child’s milestones are unique. In the early months, I was consumed with tracking Mila’s progress, stressing over every detail. However, we realized that each child progresses at their own pace, and we are incredibly proud of Mila’s journey. Her first words and steps are milestones we will forever cherish.

What are your hopes for the future for your family and for Hope for HIE?

Our ultimate hope is to see increased research and funding dedicated to HIE prevention and enhanced support and resources for families requiring long-term care. We aspire to offer emotional support and guidance to other families, just as others did for us.

Make a Lasting Impact with Hope for HIE

The holiday season offers a time for giving, but the impact of supporting Hope for HIE extends far beyond. Consider contributing to this vital cause through donations, volunteering, or simply spreading awareness about HIE.

Together, we can build a legacy of hope, compassion, and unwavering support that profoundly impacts families when they need it most.
