Lucille “Lucy” Wohltmann Hightower, a beloved resident of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on February 25, 2023, at the remarkable age of 93. Born on May 22, 1929, Lucy was known for her sharp wit, her dedication to her family, and her lifelong curiosity, particularly when it came to tracing the Hightower Family Tree.
Lucy was the daughter of John D and Emma Mohrmann Wohltmann, and she shared 75 wonderful years of marriage with her husband, William “Bill” R. Hightower. Her commitment to education led her to graduate from Memminger High School and The College of Charleston, after which she built a successful career in accounting, contributing her skills to Mt. Pleasant Boat Building, Joe Shishko Company, and Roberts Supply Company.
Beyond her professional life, Lucy was deeply involved in her community and her passions. A devoted member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant for many years, she also participated in the SC Via de Cristo. Lucy had a vibrant mind and enjoyed staying active. She was an avid bridge player, keenly followed the stock market with a passion for investing, and dedicated countless hours to researching her genealogy. Her fascination with family history often led her to uncover long-lost relatives and expand her understanding of the Hightower family tree. Those who knew Lucy appreciated her dry wit and wonderful sense of humor, which brought laughter and joy to those around her. Above all else, Lucy cherished her role as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, pouring her love and energy into her family.
Lucy is survived by her loving husband, Bill, her children Liz McMillan (Ken) of Isle of Palms, Anne White (Ron) of Leesville, SC, and Richard Hightower (Deb) of Hartsville, SC. Her legacy continues through her four grandsons: Kirk McMillan, Sean McMillan, Matthew McMillan, and Bill Hightower, and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her sisters Mildred W. Wells, Elsa W. Coleman, and Hulda J. Wohltmann.
A funeral service to celebrate Lucy’s life will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant, SC on March 9, 2023, at 11 AM, with a visitation preceding the service at 10 AM.
For those wishing to honor Lucy’s memory, the family suggests donations to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant in lieu of flowers. Lucy Hightower’s life was a testament to a life well-lived, marked by love, laughter, and a deep appreciation for her family and heritage, leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come within the Hightower family tree.
