Hello! My name is Maria De Jesus Rocha, and I am incredibly thrilled to become a part of the Baldwin familia. Trying to explain where I’m from often requires a bit of geographical context. When I mention Texas, many people immediately picture sprawling cities or endless plains, overlooking the unique cultural richness of my small town. To truly illustrate my roots, I use a simple hand gesture: holding up my left palm and folding all fingers except my thumb and index finger. Pointing to the bottom right of my hand, I proudly declare, “I’m from the Rio Grande Valley, just 30 minutes from the vibrant Mexican-American border.” This is where my story begins, a story deeply intertwined with my heritage and aspirations within the Baldwin familia.
My identity is a mosaic shaped by my family and the environment I grew up in. I am the product of my mother’s wisdom-filled dichos, my father’s passionate grito and banda music, and the lively Spanglish and delicious food that permeate my community. It was for my people, for this vibrant tapestry of culture and dreams, that I made the significant decision to pursue higher education. My aim was never to distance myself from my roots but to showcase the dynamic spirit of the Mexican people to a wider world. I wanted to challenge stereotypes and let others see individuals driven by dreams, not just by financial gain; people passionate about positive change, not fleeting desires; individuals who are hardworking contributors, not negative societal figures.
Academically, I initially planned to major in Biology and minor in Environmental Science. However, immersing myself in the Duke community has broadened my perspectives and encouraged me to question previously held certainties. This openness to exploration is exciting, and I am confident that whatever path I ultimately choose, it will be a step towards making a meaningful impact on the world. The interdisciplinary environment at Duke, combined with the supportive network of the Baldwin familia, offers an unparalleled setting for intellectual and personal growth.
