Looking back at years of family photos, the coordinated calendars, outfit purchases, and the near-impossible task of getting everyone to look at the camera at the same time were definitely challenging. But, I can honestly say I don’t regret a single photoshoot. These captured moments of our family are truly precious. Recently, we had family photos taken at our new Denver home, surrounded by the beautiful changing leaves. I’ve learned that the peak window for fall foliage colors is surprisingly short, maybe just two weeks! And aligning that with everyone’s schedules can be tricky. That’s why many families, like yours, opt for photoshoots whenever they can make the schedules align.
One crucial lesson I learned this year is to discuss editing style with your photographer beforehand. I personally prefer natural, true-to-color photos with minimal editing. So, I was disappointed when our beach family photos (taken by a different photographer than usual) came back with heavy filters and yellow tones. No matter how perfectly coordinated your fall family picture outfits are, if the final edits don’t align with your vision, you might not be completely happy with the result. These beach photos were the first ones we managed to take with my in-laws, so I cherish them for that reason, but I do wish the editing had been different!

- Bring snacks: Especially the “emergency” candy kind for kid meltdowns. Smarties are great – they melt quickly and don’t get too messy!
- Individual photos: Remember to take individual photos of each family member. These are perfect for work headshots or school pictures when you need a photo of just one child.
- Have fun! Even if a child has a meltdown, don’t stress. Those “imperfect” moments often turn out to be my favorite photos! Miss A had a toddler meltdown during one shoot, but a few snacks later, she was back to smiles.
