The Little Mermaid Costume – 2014
Our inaugural family Halloween costume holds a special place in my heart, possibly even as my all-time favorite. My eldest daughter was completely captivated by The Little Mermaid at the time, making it the perfect and most obvious choice for our first coordinated family theme. While I purchased some elements, I always aim to add my personal, unique touches to make our costumes stand out. Alice in Wonderland Costume – 2015
Selecting our family Halloween costume the following year presented a fun challenge: pregnancy! I needed to consider a costume that would comfortably accommodate my growing baby bump. Initially, we toyed with ideas to incorporate the pregnancy into the costume, but as it was still early on, it didn’t quite pan out. Serendipitously, my daughters had been watching Alice In Wonderland repeatedly, and when I suggested this theme, they were overjoyed. Peter Pan and Neverland Family Costume – 2016
With three young daughters, my primary consideration was finding a costume theme that offered at least two prominent “girl roles.” While my youngest was happy to be dressed in anything, my two older daughters often bickered over family Halloween costume ideas. Ironically, 2016 was the year Frozen exploded in popularity, but I was determined to find a theme distinct from what every other family might choose. Grease Halloween Costume – 2017
The inspiration for this year’s family Halloween costume was surprisingly simple: Hazel’s wig! Seriously! I spotted this Sandy-esque wig, and the entire Grease costume theme blossomed from there. I designed all of our costumes around that initial Sandy idea. Again, this theme offered multiple female roles, ensuring everyone in our family was thrilled with their part. The Greatest Showman Halloween Costume – 2018
This family Halloween costume was perhaps the most challenging to bring to fruition. Despite the immense popularity of The Greatest Showman movie, I was astonished to find a complete absence of readily available Halloween costumes. I had to meticulously piece together various elements to successfully pull off this theme, and I am incredibly proud that we did. Hocus Pocus Family Costume – 2019
Dressing my three daughters as the iconic Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus was a long-held dream of mine. I patiently waited for them to be old enough to truly appreciate and enjoy the movie before bringing this vision to life. My daughters are such devoted Hamilton fans that they have practically memorized every song from the Broadway musical. Inside Out Halloween Costume – 2023
Given that we had experienced a year filled with a rollercoaster of emotions – joy, sadness, disgust, fear, and anger – we felt that Inside Out was the ideal movie to represent our 2023 Halloween costume theme. I have always appreciated this film for its underlying message that all memories, even the seemingly negative ones, hold value. While we naturally gravitate towards joyful and happy moments, the less comfortable experiences can ultimately be the most enriching and formative.
