Thomas R. Whittaker, a beloved figure in The Whittaker Family and the wider community, passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack on September 11, 2021, at the age of 73. His loss is deeply felt by his wife of 50 years, Cynthia (nee Ebersole), his children, Matthew (married to June) and Amy Bolton (married to Chip), and his eight grandchildren: Michael, Kate, Bobby, Lily, twins Elizabeth and Nick, and Charlie, along with Tommy (deceased). Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Tom was the cherished son of the late Robert and Marie Whittaker (nee Joss) and the dear brother of Marilyn Wade (husband Shawn) and the late Jack Whittaker. He also leaves behind his cousin and best friend, Terry Wolford (wife Mary).
Tom’s life journey began in Willoughby Hills, Ohio, and for the past 45 years, he made Kirtland his home, building a life and raising his family with Cindy. His faith was an important aspect of his life, evident in his attendance at both New Promise and Willoughby Hills Friends Churches. A proud graduate of Willoughby South High School in 1966, Tom immediately joined the IBEW Local #38, marking the start of a dedicated career as an electrician. His commitment to service extended to the Army Reserves, which he joined after marrying Cindy in 1970.
His professional life was characterized by unwavering dedication to the electrician’s trade and the labor movement. Tom’s roles within IBEW Local #38 were diverse and impactful. He served as the Union’s apprenticeship instructor, shaping the next generation of electricians, and took on the responsibilities of financial secretary before ascending to the presidency, a position he held from 1997 to 2004. Throughout his career, Tom was a passionate advocate for organized labor, championing workers’ rights, and actively participating in the Lake County Democratic Party. Retirement didn’t slow Tom down; he found joy in yard work, tending to his garden, and relaxing by his pool. A devoted fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes, he enthusiastically watched and attended their games.
However, Tom’s greatest joy was undoubtedly his family, the Whittaker family. He was a devoted grandfather who prioritized spending time with his grandchildren, making every effort to attend their sporting events and activities. He also cherished the camaraderie of his retired wireman friends and their families, often hosting gatherings and entertaining loved ones at his home, especially for holiday celebrations.
Described as the “perfect dad,” Tom was always there to support his children, readily offering his skills to fix anything, both physically and metaphorically. His helpful nature, dedication to family, and community involvement define his legacy. Thomas R. Whittaker will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
In remembrance of Tom’s life, contributions can be made to the Holden Arboretum, an organization he supported. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Friday, September 17, 2021, at 10 AM at Willoughby Hills Friends Church, 2846 SOM Center Rd, Willoughby Hills, followed by burial at Whitehaven Memorial Park. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects and celebrate Tom’s life at THE DeJOHN-FLYNN-MYLOTT FUNERAL HOME OF WILLOUGHBY HILLS, 28890 Chardon Road, on Thursday from 4-8 PM.
