The Little Mermaid Costume – 2014
Our very first family Halloween costume remains a sentimental favorite – perhaps even my all-time best family Halloween costume idea. My eldest daughter was completely captivated by The Little Mermaid, making it the perfect theme to launch our family costume tradition. While we purchased some elements, I always love adding personal touches to make our costumes unique. Alice in Wonderland Costume – 2015
Choosing the family Halloween costume theme the following year presented a fun challenge: pregnancy! I needed to consider costumes that would accommodate my growing belly. Initially, we explored ideas that incorporated my pregnancy, but it was still too early to effectively pull off. Serendipitously, my daughters had been watching Alice in Wonderland repeatedly, and when I suggested this theme, they were overjoyed. Peter Pan and Neverland Family Costume – 2016
With three young daughters, finding a costume theme with at least two prominent “girl roles” was essential. While our youngest was happy in any costume, my two older daughters often clashed when brainstorming family Halloween costume ideas. Interestingly, 2016 was the year Frozen exploded in popularity, but I was determined to find a theme distinct from what every other family might choose. Grease Halloween Costume – 2017
The inspiration for this year’s family Halloween costume was surprisingly simple: Hazel’s wig! Seriously! I spotted this Sandy wig and costume and immediately knew we had to build our family costumes around it. The Greatest Showman Halloween Costume – 2018
This costume was perhaps the most challenging to bring to life. Despite the immense popularity of The Greatest Showman movie, pre-made Halloween costumes were surprisingly scarce. I had to creatively piece together various items to successfully create this family Halloween costume, and I’m so thrilled we did. Hocus Pocus Family Costume – 2019
Dressing my three daughters as the Sanderson Sisters from Hocus Pocus had long been a Halloween dream of mine. I waited until they were old enough to appreciate and enjoy the movie fully. Broadway Musical Hamilton Costume – 2020
My daughters are huge Hamilton fans, having watched the musical so many times they’ve practically memorized every song. This costume was incredibly fun for us to assemble and even more enjoyable as we reenacted scenes and sang songs together. Inside Out Halloween Costume – 2023
Given that our year was filled with a rollercoaster of joy, sadness, disgust, fear, and anger, we felt Inside Out was the perfect movie to represent our 2023 Halloween costume. I’ve always cherished this movie’s message that all memories, even the unpleasant ones, are valuable. While we naturally strive for joyful and happy moments, those uncomfortable times can ultimately be the most meaningful.
