Family Fun Hobbies Store in Mercerville Closes Doors, But Gaming Community Spirit Remains

It’s always sad news when a local business that’s become a community hub has to close its doors. Unfortunately, Family Fun Hobbies, a beloved store located in the Mercerville section of Hamilton, New Jersey, has announced its permanent closure. This family-owned business, situated in The Court at Hamilton Station near the RWJ Fitness Center on Quakerbridge Road, has been a go-to destination for hobby enthusiasts and families seeking fun for years.

The heartfelt announcement came via a Facebook video from co-owner Katrina Placer, who tearfully explained the difficult circumstances leading to the store’s closure.

The primary reason for this closure is deeply personal: Katrina’s husband and co-owner, Rob Placer, suffered a stroke and requires ongoing care, making it impossible for him to return to the store. Katrina expressed her sincere gratitude to the community for their incredible support and love throughout the years. Family Fun Hobbies was more than just a store; it was a place where memories were made, and friendships blossomed, especially through the numerous events and game nights they hosted.

Reflecting on the impact of Family Fun Hobbies, customer Carlie Maple commented, “I have had some of the best memories and have met some of my best friends here. From the old small tiny store, to opening your hearts to an even bigger store and family, we appreciate all of that. It will be missed.” This sentiment echoes the feelings of many in the community who cherished the welcoming atmosphere and sense of belonging fostered by the Placers and their store.

In a final gesture of appreciation, Katrina invited everyone to visit the store on its last day, July 21, 2024, for cake and a chance to say goodbye and celebrate the community they had built together. While the closure marks the end of an era for Family Fun Hobbies, Katrina offered a glimmer of hope. She hinted that the dedicated and supportive staff, who played a crucial role in keeping the store running after Rob’s stroke, would be carrying on the spirit of the gaming community.

Miranda Suarez later announced that this fantastic team has indeed found an investor and is set to open a new venture called Round 2 Gaming in Mercer County. This exciting news means that while Family Fun Hobbies may be closing, the vibrant gaming community it nurtured will continue to thrive in a new chapter. Further details about Round 2 Gaming, including the opening date and location, are eagerly awaited, and updates will be shared as soon as they become available.
