Looking for a spot that combines entertainment for the whole family? Tucked away in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, Grand Slam Family Fun Center offers a variety of attractions, with indoor mini-golf as a central draw. Having explored numerous mini-golf courses, we ventured into Grand Slam to see if it lived up to its name. Located just west of another local mini-golf spot, Lilli Putt, Grand Slam resides in an area of Coon Rapids with a unique history, connected to what was once the Coon Rapids Family Center Mall, previously a Red Owl grocery store in the 80s. Frankly, discovering anything still operating within this vicinity was a surprise. Searching for indoor mini-golf options led us to Grand Slam, and on a typical gloomy Minnesota winter day, it seemed like the perfect escape for the Pink Putter and myself.
Experiencing Grand Slam in 2019: Still a Fun Family Outing
Having visited Grand Slam multiple times since our initial play, including a recent walkthrough in 2019, we can confirm it remains a solid option for family fun. The mini-golf course is still well-maintained and offers an enjoyable experience.
Rating the Mini-Golf: A Solid “Par”
Indoor mini-golf courses can be unpredictable. Some rely heavily on black lights for atmosphere over quality, while others experiment with temporary, art-focused designs. Grand Slam carves its own path. The course designers cleverly utilized the high ceilings of the space to create a multi-level, castle-themed experience. The main feature is an impressive castle facade that wraps around the mini-golf area, immersing players in a medieval world filled with mythical characters. Navigating the course involves playing around and even across upper levels of this castle structure, particularly for the back nine holes.
Initially, after playing but before writing this review, I considered a slightly higher rating. Perhaps a “birdie”? However, revisiting our photos and notes brought back some of the shortcomings that ultimately led to a “par” rating. While Grand Slam attempts to create an exceptional experience, some aspects hold it back from reaching “grand slam” status.
The medieval theme is integrated into the obstacles and hole designs, which is a definite plus. However, the overall execution and visual appeal feel somewhat lacking. The medieval concept is fun in principle, but the actual construction comes across as inexpensive and somewhat fragile. Many hazards show signs of wear and tear, and some structures appear uneven or poorly maintained. The hole cups themselves are inconsistent – some are standard plastic cups, while others are simply openings leading to the concrete floor beneath. In many ways, the condition of Grand Slam mirrors the somewhat faded surroundings of its location. It aims for a grand, above-average experience but unfortunately falls a bit short of that mark.
