Comprehensive Family Care Residency at HealthPoint

HealthPoint Family Medicine Residency is dedicated to cultivating full-scope primary care physicians adept at thriving in diverse healthcare environments, ranging from community health centers to comprehensive care settings. Our program equally emphasizes all facets of family medicine, ensuring our graduates are well-prepared for the multifaceted demands of primary care. The curriculum is built upon three fundamental pillars of family medicine: inpatient adult and pediatric medicine, obstetrics, and outpatient continuity clinic.

Inpatient Medicine – Adults and Pediatrics

Residents participate in nine months of inpatient adult medicine, collaborating closely with family medicine attending physicians and a resident team in two-week blocks. This structure allows for sustained exposure to inpatient care throughout all three years of the program.

Our pediatric inpatient experience features a dedicated one-month rotation at Seattle Children’s Hospital. This provides residents with invaluable hands-on experience in the specialized care of hospitalized children, enhancing their skills in pediatric health within a renowned institution.

Obstetrics

Our obstetrics training comprises three months of immersive OB rotations. During these rotations, residents work alongside family medicine attending physicians, OB-GYNs, and midwives within the obstetrics department. This collaborative approach ensures a well-rounded understanding of maternal care.

For residents with a strong interest in pursuing obstetrics, we offer a specialized OB track. This allows for focused development in obstetrics alongside outpatient medicine, further strengthening expertise in both maternal and child health for those aiming for advanced practice in this area of family care.

Continuity Clinic

Continuity of care is a central tenet of our program at Healthpoint Family Care. Residents maintain a consistent outpatient clinic schedule throughout their three years, enabling them to establish enduring patient relationships and manage their health needs over time. This longitudinal experience is crucial for developing comprehensive family care skills.

Our continuity clinic experience is enriched by specialized clinics, including focused training in procedure clinics, refugee health, and a low-barrier substance use disorder clinic. These specialized experiences broaden residents’ understanding of diverse patient populations and healthcare needs within the community.

Beyond these core areas, we provide opportunities in specialty clinics, such as rotations in dermatology, urology, sports medicine, orthopedics, ENT, urgent care, and geriatrics. Residents also complete rotations in crucial areas like health and wellness, population health and community medicine, and refugee health. Furthermore, six elective blocks are integrated into the curriculum, allowing residents to tailor their training to their specific professional interests within family care.

Didactics: Our program incorporates a dedicated four-hour weekly didactic session, bringing together all residents and faculty for collaborative learning and professional development. These sessions cover a broad spectrum of essential topics, including in-depth morbidity and mortality reviews, case-based education to enhance clinical reasoning, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) training, and practical practice management skills. Active participation in these didactic sessions fosters a deeper understanding of clinical practice and promotes shared learning within the HealthPoint family care program community.

OMT/OPP: At HealthPoint Family Medicine Residency, we are committed to supporting our DO residents in developing and refining their Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) and Osteopathic Principles and Practices (OPP) skills. Our curriculum strongly supports and seamlessly integrates OMT and OPP, with dedicated DO faculty readily available to provide guidance and mentorship at every stage of their residency journey. This ensures our DO residents are well-equipped to incorporate these valuable skills into their future family care practices.

Throughout our comprehensive curriculum, we emphasize the paramount importance of continuity within the clinic setting. This focus enables residents to follow patients longitudinally, gaining the essential skills needed to effectively navigate the complexities of outpatient care and build lasting relationships within the HealthPoint family care framework. Our program delivers robust, full-spectrum training that thoroughly prepares residents to excel in diverse practice environments and effectively address the multifaceted healthcare needs of varied populations, embodying the core values of comprehensive family care.
