Jim Ballard had an intuition. Customers of James Arthur Vineyards are thankful he listened to it. Jim believed his father-in-law’s land, situated north of Lincoln, Nebraska, possessed the ideal conditions for cultivating grapes. With his father-in-law’s consent, Jim planted grapevines, hoping his pastime would eventually yield quality homemade wine to share with loved ones. It did, and Jim’s hobby evolved in an unexpected direction. James Arthur Vineyards commenced operations five years later. A former broadcast journalist holding a Master’s degree in Journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Jim is now JAV’s head winemaker. He remains active in the winery’s daily operations and special events. His objective is to produce award-winning Nebraska wine while ensuring that guests at James Arthur Vineyards enjoy an enriching, exciting, and memorable experience.
Though she considers herself “retired,” Barb Ballard maintains a busy schedule. Her primary focus is being a mother to their three children: Benjamin, Beau, and Edyn. Following closely is managing the daily functioning of JAV, overseeing the winery’s gift shop, and dedicating time to the From Nebraska Gift Shop in Lincoln’s Haymarket. She also organizes the numerous special events JAV hosts throughout the year and manages the tasting room. Quite an accomplishment for someone “retired”!
Barb is a graduate of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a degree in broadcast journalism. She initially worked as a producer for a Lincoln television station before becoming a talent and casting agent in Omaha. Later, she served as office manager for her father’s meatpacking plant. Barb transitioned from full-time employment when the Ballards were expecting their second child. She emerged from “retirement” when her parents established the winery. Her current focus, as it has always been, centers on family, friends, and interpersonal interactions. It’s an ideal combination for her role in the Jav Family business.
