Ronald Hal Yost Obituary – Remembering a Beloved Father and “Pa” at Klaassen Family Funeral Home

“My walk had purpose, my steps were quick and light, and I held firmly to what I felt was right.” – Robert Clark Seger

Ronald Hal Yost, a cherished father and affectionately known as “Pa,” peacefully passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, in the embrace of his loving family. He was 72 years young.

Born on February 29, 1952, in Grand Haven, MI, Ron was the youngest of thirteen children born to Jasper Newton and Mildred Ann (Cady) Yost. His roots ran deep in the Tri-Cities area, where he lived his entire life. A proud graduate of Grand Haven High School in 1970, Ron answered the call to serve his country as a Sergeant and Military Police Officer in the United States Army. Stationed at Forts Gordon and Belvoir, he undertook the significant responsibility of prisoner transfers from Washington D.C. to Leavenworth Prison in Kansas. Following his honorable discharge, Ron dedicated his professional life to A&C Carriers and later enjoyed a distinguished 30-year career at Western Michigan Fleet Parts.

At the heart of Ron’s life was an enduring love story with his wife, Donna. Their paths first crossed at a dance in downtown Grand Haven in 1966, and their youthful romance blossomed into marriage on September 26, 1970. For over half a century, Ron and Donna created a life rich in love, laughter, music, and shared adventures with their beloved pets and travels. Above all, their world revolved around family.

Together, Ron and Donna raised three children: Thaye (1972-2019), Jessica, and Matt. Ron truly embodied the essence of a “family man.” His unwavering commitment to his family was the guiding principle in his life. He was a dedicated provider, working diligently and traveling extensively to support the dreams he and Donna held for their children. Ron was a pillar of strength and love, offering both firm guidance and a comforting presence during life’s challenges. As lovingly remarked at his bedside, “He took care of everyone right until the very end.”

Beyond his family, Ron had a passion for cars and motorcycles, especially the fast ones. He and Donna shared a love for travel, always drawn to warm destinations. Ron enjoyed spending time with his longtime friends at the Grand Haven American Legion Post #28 and the marina. Unbeknownst to many, Ron also possessed a remarkable talent for drawing, creating exceptional draftsman work and cartoon art. He was an avid sports enthusiast and a devoted fan of the Bad Boy Detroit Pistons, Michigan State Spartans, and the ever-hopeful Detroit Lions.

After Donna’s passing, a part of Ron seemed lost. It was as if a knight had lost his purpose. It brings comfort to his family that he is now reunited with Donna, his beloved wife, and that his heart is finally at peace.

Ron’s legacy continues through his daughter, Jessica (Kelly) Hamberg; son, Matt Yost; and sister, Leora K. Stone. His strength and love are also carried on by his cherished grandchildren: Olivia Young, Avery and Abigail Hamberg, and Morgan and Peyton Yost. He is also fondly remembered by Jesse Bruce, his wife, Laurice Sacamay, and their children, Hannah Bruce and Raphaella Sacamay.

The family expresses their sincere gratitude to Trinity Health & MediLodge of the Shore in Grand Haven and Trinity Health Muskegon for their compassionate care and comfort during Ron’s final days.

Ron was predeceased by his parents; his beloved wife, Donna Kay Yost; his daughter, Thaye Darmon Bruce; his brother, Robert Eugene Yost, and his wife, Carol; his parents-in-law, Louis and Alvina Nienhouse; and his brother-in-law, Jerry Nienhouse.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Ron’s life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 21, 2025, at Klaassen Family Funeral Home, located at 1500 Robbins Rd, Grand Haven, MI 49417. Pastor Doug Bytwerk will officiate the service. Relatives and friends are invited to pay their respects during visitation hours on Monday, January 20th, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ron, you were a good man, the bedrock of our family. Donna gave us spirit, and you gave us strength. These qualities will keep your memory and Donna’s alive in our hearts forever. We find solace in imagining a joyful reunion in the heavens, where a daughter embraces her “Daddy,” and a beloved couple is once again dancing to “Gimmie Some Lovin'” under the glow of a Wurlitzer. Pa, may the lyrics of one of your favorite songs resonate with your soul as you finally open up that throttle.

“Put a candle in the window, ’cause I feel I’ve got to move, though I’m going, going, I’ll be coming home soon, long as I can see the light.” – John Cameron Fogerty
