After over 25 years of laughter, thrilling rides, and countless family memories, the Mulligan Family Fun Center in Torrance is set to close its doors. The beloved entertainment hub, known for its go-kart tracks, vibrant arcade, and miniature golf course, will cease operations on February 17th, marking the end of an era for family fun in the South Bay.
Kevin Altobelli, VP of Operations, who has dedicated a significant part of his career to Mulligan’s, shared the sentiment of many in the community. “I started here as an entry-level position and worked my way up, working pretty much every position here,” Altobelli explained. His journey reflects the deep connection many have with the center, which has been a fixture in Torrance for generations.
Mulligan Family Fun Center started as a passion project, envisioned by its founder Georgia Claessens as an accessible and enjoyable amusement destination for the South Bay community. For over two decades, it fulfilled this mission, evolving and adapting its attractions to remain a relevant and exciting place for families. From tokens to digital systems, and from classic games to new attractions, Mulligan’s has constantly aimed to provide fun and affordable entertainment.
Julian Irons, a long-time patron, embodies the center’s impact on the community. Recalling childhood birthdays and countless hours spent at the arcade, Irons shared, “My mom has spent way too much money on me for tokens for the arcade… and we just sat down and played an arcade game where you shoot a bunch of spiders.” His memories are a testament to the experiences and bonds forged within the walls of Mulligan’s.
The decision to close the Torrance location comes after the passing of founder Georgia Claessens in 2016. Her family, after careful consideration, made the difficult choice to close this cherished location. “That’s sad,” Irons reflected upon hearing the news. “It’s going to be weird seeing whatever is here after Mulligan’s is gone. It’s going to be weird seeing something else here.” This sentiment echoes across the community, as residents grapple with the impending loss of a familiar landmark.
For employees like Altobelli, Mulligan’s is more than just a workplace; it’s a place filled with shared experiences and community spirit. “As technology has come, the games have changed through the years switching from tokens to a digital system and yeah just a ton of memories not only for the employees and myself but for the community and all the kids that have come in and out of here,” Altobelli noted. The closure signifies not just the end of a business, but also the closing of a chapter for those who worked and played there.
In a statement, the Claessens family expressed their gratitude, “The family would like to thank the South Bay for supporting their mom’s dream for over 26 years.” As Torrance prepares to say goodbye to Mulligan Family Fun Center, the memories created within its walls will undoubtedly endure. While the Torrance location is closing, the Mulligan Family Fun Center legacy continues at its Palmdale and Murrietta locations, ensuring that families can still experience the fun and entertainment that Mulligan’s provides. Until its final day in February, the team at Torrance Mulligan Family Fun Center remains committed to providing smiles and upholding the happy legacy that has defined this community treasure.
