Muskegon Family Care, a vital healthcare provider in Muskegon, Michigan, has announced a significant leadership change. Seven months after the departure of its former chief executive officer, the board of directors has unanimously appointed Tracy G. McDaniel as the new CEO. This transition marks a new chapter for Muskegon Family Care, as McDaniel steps in to guide the organization forward.
McDaniel officially began his role on Monday, taking over from Dan Ogelsby, who was brought in the previous year to address severe financial difficulties that nearly led to the closure of Muskegon Family Care. Ogelsby’s tenure followed a period of considerable challenges for the Muskegon Heights healthcare center, including a possible embezzlement investigation and a lawsuit from former staff members. In March, the board decided not to renew Ogelsby’s contract, initiating a search for new leadership to stabilize and grow the organization.
Kathy Covington, chair of the Muskegon Family Care board of directors, highlighted the rigorous national search that led to McDaniel’s appointment. “His professional experience in healthcare spans both people and policies, making him an ideal match for Muskegon Family Care,” Covington stated. The board expressed strong confidence in McDaniel’s ability to lead Muskegon Family Care into a phase of growth and expanded service to the community. “The board of directors is confident that under Tracy’s leadership, wisdom and guidance, MFC will help more people, save more lives and achieve even more during our next phase of growth and opportunity,” Covington added.
McDaniel brings a wealth of experience to Muskegon Family Care, with over 20 years in the healthcare sector. Most recently, he served as CEO of Long Island Select Care in New York, where he spearheaded the development of an $18 million federally qualified health center. This center provided crucial clinical and rehabilitative services across Suffolk County. His prior leadership roles also include operational responsibilities at the Baltimore Medical System and the Brooklyn Plaza Medical Center, demonstrating a consistent track record of effective healthcare management.
“I was drawn to Muskegon Family Care because of its mission and the community it serves,” McDaniel remarked. He emphasized the critical role of organizations like Muskegon Family Care in community well-being. “Promoting and serving the physical, emotional and spiritual health of people is the foundation of a community, and Muskegon Family Care does it exceptionally well.”
Muskegon Family Care is a federally qualified health center committed to providing essential medical, dental, behavioral health, women’s health, and pharmacy services. A significant portion of its patient base, approximately 85% in 2020, are low-income individuals, underscoring its importance in providing healthcare access to vulnerable populations within Muskegon. With operating costs around $14.2 million last year, the center plays a crucial role in the local healthcare landscape. The appointment of Tracy G. McDaniel as CEO signals a positive step forward for Muskegon Family Care, poised to strengthen its services and community impact under his leadership.
