Newport Family Medicine: Your Ideal Family Medicine Residency Program

Mission Statement

Newport Family Medicine is dedicated to cultivating family medicine physicians who are deeply rooted in collaboration, compassion, and accountability. Our primary mission is to enhance the health and well-being of rural and underserved communities through comprehensive and patient-centered care.

Our program’s mission is intrinsically linked to the broader Samaritan Health Services mission of ‘Building Healthier Communities Together.’ This shared vision fosters a collaborative environment essential for delivering exceptional patient care in today’s dynamic healthcare landscape. We strive to create an atmosphere where teamwork and mutual respect are paramount, ensuring the best possible outcomes for both our patients and our resident physicians.

Core Values of Our Program

At Newport Family Medicine, we are committed to equipping our family medicine residents with a diverse skillset necessary for thriving in rural and underserved settings. We champion adaptability, integrity, and genuine compassion in all aspects of patient care. We encourage our residents to pursue scholarly endeavors, contributing to the ever-evolving field of primary care and advancing medical knowledge.

Our program emphasizes a steadfast commitment to excellence and the principle of lifelong learning. We encourage residents to embrace challenges and cultivate fearless self-awareness through consistent self-reflection and evaluation. We deeply value collaboration and inter-professional unity, believing these are crucial for effectively addressing the multifaceted health needs of any community.

Clinical Experience at Newport Family Medicine

The continuity clinic experience is based at Newport Family Medicine, a recognized patient-centered medical home within a hospital setting. This integrated environment provides residents with seamless access to essential support services, including behavioral health specialists, clinical pharmacy expertise, coordinated care services, and dedicated clinical nursing support. Our residency program also benefits from shared clinical spaces with a diverse range of specialists, encompassing orthopedics, surgical disciplines, pediatrics, and gynecologic care.

Inpatient care forms a significant component of our comprehensive curriculum across all three years of residency training. We are committed to supporting resident well-being and work-life balance through a thoughtfully structured call schedule that limits overnight and weekend responsibilities. This allows our residents to gain crucial inpatient experience while maintaining a healthy personal life.

Resident Wellness and Support

Resident wellness is a cornerstone of our training philosophy at Newport Family Medicine. Recognizing the demands of residency, we have integrated unscheduled time into several rotations throughout all three years. This dedicated time during business hours allows residents the flexibility to prioritize personal wellness activities or attend healthcare appointments as needed.

Our program offers a robust suite of wellness resources, including quarterly wellness half-days, bi-annual resident-only retreats designed to foster camaraderie and rejuvenation, monthly Balint groups for peer support and reflection, dedicated peer and faculty mentorship programs, and an intensive intern orientation block to ensure residents are well-prepared for success in their rotations. Furthermore, residents benefit from institutional-level resources such as complimentary SamFit gym memberships, access to the Vital WorkLife for Physicians program, the Employee Assistance Program for confidential counseling services, and free access to leading mindfulness applications, including Headspace, to support mental and emotional well-being.
