Looking for exciting Places To Go With Family? Start your adventure at the Starved Rock Visitor Center. If you’re seeking insider tips and detailed information about the region, this is the perfect first stop. During our visit, the staff were incredibly helpful, guiding us towards a less crowded entrance to Matthiessen State Park and providing us with essential trail maps to make the most of our family day out.
Unveiling Matthiessen State Park’s Secret Entrance
Thanks to the park ranger’s tip at Starved Rock Visitor Center, we discovered a “secret entrance” to Matthiessen State Park that felt like a local’s hidden gem. We navigated south on Rt. 178, then turned right onto Rt. 71. Keeping an eye out for an old horse barn on the right, we then made a left onto the street adjacent to the golf course. Driving past a few charming residential homes, we continued until we reached a smaller, less congested parking area conveniently located by the Lake Shelter.

Embarking on the Lake Waterfall Trail
From the Lake Shelter parking, a boardwalk led us directly to the Lake Waterfall Trail. Almost immediately, we encountered stairs descending into the canyon. The recent rain had raised the water levels, causing a moment of hesitation. However, spotting another family confidently exploring ahead encouraged us to embrace the adventure!

We’re so glad we decided to venture down! Crossing the stream became an exciting game of hopscotch, using concrete steps, fallen logs, and strategically placed rocks to avoid getting our feet wet. Despite our best efforts, the higher water levels meant a little splashing was inevitable in certain spots, adding to the thrill for the kids.

Exploring Cascade Falls Trail and Unexpected Paths
A major highlight we were eager to experience was Cascade Falls. Starting from the main parking lot near the fort area, we descended a long set of stairs (be prepared for quite a few!). At the bottom, we turned left, proceeding until we found the staircase leading down into the Lower Dells.

Admittedly, map-reading wasn’t my strong suit that day, and we accidentally ventured in the opposite direction of Cascade Falls! Our little group tried valiantly to stick to the marked trails, but quickly discovered they were incredibly muddy (resulting in a lost shoe incident!). Making a quick family decision, we opted to embrace the creek instead – wet shoes and all!

It turned into quite an unexpected adventure, and honestly, tons of fun. Getting a little lost was actually a highlight!

Discovering the Fort
Before concluding our visit, we explored the reconstructed fort, reminiscent of those historically built by the French during the 17th and 18th centuries. It offered a fascinating glimpse into the area’s past.
