Meet Randall and Barry: The Proud Family Gets New Dads

The upcoming reboot of the beloved animated series, The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder, is set to introduce some exciting new characters, expanding the Penny Proud universe in fresh and inclusive ways. Among the most anticipated additions are Randall Leibowitz-Jenkins and Barry Leibowitz-Jenkins, voiced by Emmy winner Billy Porter and Emmy nominee Zachary Quinto, respectively. These talented actors will bring to life the mixed-race adoptive parents of 14-year-old activist Maya Leibowitz-Jenkins, played by Keke Palmer, as previously reported by EW. This expansion of the Proud Family promises to resonate with modern audiences while retaining the heart of the original series.

First-look photos reveal the dynamic of this new proud family duo. Randall, the shorter of the pair, exudes confidence in a stylish suit paired with a pink shirt and a vibrant magenta polka-dot tie. Barry, towering behind him with a hand affectionately placed on Randall’s shoulder, showcases a more casual yet equally striking look in a mustard polo tucked into jeans, complete with a statement belt. Their visual presentation immediately suggests a loving and complementary partnership, adding depth and richness to the proud family narrative.

The introduction of Randall and Barry marks a significant step forward for The Proud Family. While the original series was lauded for its representation of Black and Latinx families, this reboot, Louder and Prouder, embraces further inclusivity. Looking back, the original series featured Michael Collins, a recurring character understood to be queer, though never explicitly stated. Michael, who shared a name with this writer, was depicted with a love for fashion and dance. However, his storylines, even for the early 2000s, often relied on outdated tropes. Michael faced constant bullying and derogatory terms like “sissy,” and his own father, a school sports coach, was so ashamed that he insisted Michael address him as “Coach” in public.

Interestingly, Michael Collins is also set to return in Louder and Prouder, but with a vastly different and more sensitive portrayal. This time, Michael will be voiced by EJ Johnson, the gender nonconforming son of Magic Johnson and a former star of Rich Kids of Beverly Hills. Described as “Penny’s best guy friend” and a “non-conforming trendsetter,” Michael is now celebrated for his bold fashion choices both at school and on the basketball court. The early 2000s Michael was characterized by oversized t-shirts and headbands, but EW‘s first glimpse of the updated character reveals a fashion-forward individual with balloon sleeves, suspenders, and pink-highlighted dreadlocks. This evolution of Michael, alongside the introduction of Randall and Barry, underscores the commitment of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder to reflect contemporary audiences and their diverse experiences, making it a truly proud family for a new generation.
