Our Guiding Philosophy: Integrity, Excellence, and Community Commitment

Our residency training is built upon a strong philosophical foundation that emphasizes:

  • Integrity: We instill the paramount importance of adhering to sound moral and ethical principles in every facet of professional practice, recognizing this as the bedrock of exceptional medical care for San Antonio family physicians.
  • Excellence: We foster a culture of scholarly pursuit, encouraging residents to focus their academic endeavors on their individual visions for their future practices, pushing the boundaries of excellence in family medicine.
  • Commitment to the Community: We immerse our residents in the local community, fostering a deep understanding of and dedication to serving the unique health needs of the population we serve, creating San Antonio family physicians deeply connected to their patients.
  • Continuity of Care in Ambulatory Settings: We prioritize hands-on experience from day one, with first-year residents averaging more than two half-days per week at the Family Health Center, building a strong foundation in outpatient care.
  • Communication Skills: We recognize that effective verbal and written communication skills are the cornerstone of patient-centered, high-quality medical care, emphasizing their development throughout the program.
  • Family Physicians Training Family Physicians: We are proud that 70% of our curriculum is taught by dedicated Family Medicine Faculty, ensuring residents are mentored by experienced practitioners in their chosen field.

Central to our program’s mission is the profound understanding of the pivotal roles of family and community in patient care. We firmly believe that social and psychological factors are as critical as biomedical factors in overall health and well-being. Well-trained San Antonio family physicians from our program are not only skilled clinicians but also effective communicators, wise counselors, and empathetic healers who understand the broader context of their patients’ lives and the diverse health needs of the communities they serve.
