Immersed in Espionage and Sushi: My Spy x Family Anime Day

Today was the perfect “Spy x Family Saturday”! Driven by my love for the Spy Family Anime, I embarked on a day filled with themed delights, starting with a visit to Kura Sushi, which is currently hosting an exciting Spy x Family collaboration. The moment I stepped into the restaurant, I was greeted by a vibrant celebration of the Forger family!

Everywhere I looked, there were delightful touches celebrating the spy family anime. Even the path to the restroom was brightened by the Forgers!

The collaboration featured a selection of exclusive Spy x Family anime prizes available through the Bikkura Pon gacha machines, triggered by ordering plates of sushi. While you could try your luck with the gacha, they also offered the option to purchase specific prizes directly. Being someone who prefers not to rely on blind luck, I opted to buy the items I wanted: the adorable magnet sets and a couple of stylish lanyards.

They also had acrylic keychains, but I decided to skip those, as I already have a substantial collection, and they featured the same artwork as the magnets. Since sushi isn’t my main culinary passion, I only had a few plates. However, my friend, who accompanied me, enjoyed enough sushi for us to get a free gacha pull. To our delight, it turned out to be the Loid magnet set, saving me from having to purchase it separately! Pro-tip: always double-check your gacha prizes before leaving! I’m glad I did, because they initially gave me two Yor magnet sets instead of the family set. Thankfully, the staff quickly corrected the mistake.

Following our sushi and spy family anime merchandise adventure, we headed to a nearby game store to participate in a Spy x Family Weiss Schwarz title cup tournament. This particular game store was new to us, and upon entering, the owner informed us that we were the only ones who had signed up! Apparently, most of the Weiss Schwarz community in Southern California tends to attend tournaments closer to Los Angeles. Additionally, there was another major Weiss Schwarz event taking place on the same day. Nevertheless, the store was still able to officially host the title cup, so my friend and I ended up having our own private tournament, complete with a best-of-three round! Adding to the amusement, my friend, a seasoned Weiss player, didn’t actually own any Spy x Family anime cards. He borrowed one of my decks for the tournament! I managed to win one out of the three games, with him winning two. However, being the generous friend he is, he gifted me the winning card anyway, since it was my deck (albeit with some minor modifications) that he used. The store owner was also incredibly kind and gave us extra promo cards since we were the only attendees.

Here’s a glimpse of the deck I built for the title cup – a Yor-focused deck, naturally, with Loid, Anya, and Bond providing essential support, staying true to the spy family anime dynamic. (I even brought my little Yor figure along for good luck, though it seems I didn’t ultimately need it!).

I’m already looking forward to attending another spy family anime Weiss Schwarz title cup later this month. Hopefully, that one will have a larger turnout and even more opportunities to celebrate this amazing series!
