What sets the JW Marriott San Antonio apart is its expansive and impeccably maintained pool area. Kids will be thrilled with the lazy river, thrilling water slides, and dedicated sandy beach pool, perfect for building sandcastles and splashing around. For adults seeking relaxation, the adults-only hot tub offers a tranquil escape with breathtaking views of the rolling Hill Country landscape, particularly stunning at sunset.

Evenings at the JW Marriott are just as magical. Our family especially loves the nightly s’mores, a delightful treat enjoyed around cozy fire pits. And for a unique and fun experience, don’t miss the rubber duck race on Sunday mornings – a charming tradition that our kids eagerly anticipate before heading home.

Dining at the resort is a treat in itself. Cibolo Moon, one of the many on-site restaurants, is a must-visit. We wholeheartedly recommend their filet mignon – it truly is exceptional! While waiting for your table, the expansive back patio provides ample space for kids to play. Our family enjoys games like tag and cornhole on the sprawling green lawn just off the main building.

Beyond the pools and dining, the resort boasts championship golf courses and scenic walking trails, offering activities for every interest. We recently hosted a family reunion at the JW San Antonio, and it was a resounding success, enjoyed by everyone from the youngest babies to the eldest grandparents. It’s truly our go-to destination for family vacations in Texas.

What We Love Most:

  • Unforgettable Steaks at Cibolo Moon: The dining experience here is a highlight of every visit.
  • Lazy River Relaxation: A must-do for ultimate relaxation. Explore more of the Best Texas Lazy Rivers!

2. Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center – Dallas / Fort Worth, Texas

Located in Grapevine, Texas, conveniently situated between Dallas and Fort Worth, the Gaylord Texan Resort & Convention Center offers a unique and immersive experience for families. One of its most distinctive features is its three sprawling atriums. These indoor gardens create the illusion of being outdoors, while providing blissful, air-conditioned comfort – a welcome respite from the Texas heat, especially during the long summer months, and even extending from late spring to early fall!

The Gaylord Texan goes above and beyond to entertain guests of all ages. Keep an eye out for the beloved seasonal characters that roam the resort grounds. Meeting Shrek, Papa Smurf, and even Santa Claus in past years has been a delightful surprise for our family – and perhaps even more exciting for the adults than we care to admit!

For water park enthusiasts, Paradise Springs is a must-visit. This fort-themed water playground is a LEGIT experience! Accessible via a short shuttle ride from the main resort (or a pleasant 15-20 minute walk past scenic Lake Grapevine), Paradise Springs is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

During the holiday season, the Gaylord Texan transforms into a winter wonderland. We love kicking off December with a weekend immersed in the holiday magic of ICE! Gaylord Texan, ice skating, and enjoying a festive character breakfast. It’s the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit!

  • Atrium Dining: Enjoying a delicious meal on an “outdoor deck” without the Texas heat.

3. Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa – Bastrop / Austin, Texas

For families seeking a retreat that feels truly away from it all, yet remains conveniently accessible, the Hyatt Regency Lost Pines Resort and Spa is an exceptional choice. Located near Bastrop and a short 45-minute drive from Austin, this resort offers a sense of “remote” tranquility unmatched by other Texas family resorts.

Surrounded by a vast nature preserve, Hyatt Regency Lost Pines provides an immersive outdoor experience. You’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a state park, with abundant outdoor activities such as nature trails and horseback riding readily available.

During our family vacations here, we gravitate towards the lazy river. Finding lounge chairs under the shade of a pecan tree, with poolside service at our fingertips, is pure bliss. The 1,000-foot lazy river meanders throughout the pool area, connecting all the pools and slides. It even links to a fun beachfront pool and a riverside swim-up bar, meaning you could spend the entire day afloat! While there are heated outdoor swimming pools for cooler months, the lazy river itself is unheated.

One thing to note is that cell phone service can be spotty at this resort – part of its charm as a remote getaway! However, we’ve found Verizon to offer the most reliable coverage.

Evenings at Hyatt Regency Lost Pines are best spent relaxing in rocking chairs around the fire pit, drink in hand, and gazing up at the breathtaking starry night sky. It’s a truly magical experience that shouldn’t be missed.

What We Love Most:

  • Pecan Tree Pool Lounging: Unwinding in the shade by the pool is pure relaxation.
  • Rocking Chair Relaxation: Enjoying downtime while kids play lawn games.
  • Lazy River Escape: Drifting away in the expansive lazy river. Discover more Best Texas Lazy Rivers.
