Dennis “Denny” Ray Klingensmith, a beloved resident of Newton, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at MercyOne Des Moines at the age of 64. His life, deeply rooted in the Newton community, will be honored with a memorial service on Wednesday, August 28, 2024, at 5:00 p.m. at the Newton High School Upper Gymnasium. Arrangements are being handled by Wallace Family Funeral Home in Newton, Iowa, where memorials can also be directed.
Born on June 15, 1960, in Newton, Denny was the son of Forrest and Betty (Gardner) Klingensmith. From his earliest days, Denny embodied the spirit of Newton, proudly graduating from Newton High School in 1978 and becoming a lifelong supporter of the Newton Cardinals. His commitment to service extended beyond his hometown. Denny honorably served in the U.S. Army from August 11, 1978, to August 5, 1982, demonstrating his dedication to his country.
Upon returning to Newton, Denny embarked on a 36-year career with the Newton School District, beginning in March 1983. He initially worked at Newton High School before moving to Thomas Jefferson in 1988. Retiring in the fall of 2019, Denny’s contributions to the school district were immense. Beyond his maintenance duties, he took on the crucial role of Event Manager at H.A. Lynn Field. His meticulous preparation and unwavering dedication ensured the stadium was always ready for athletes and fans alike, showcasing his deep “Red Pride.” Denny’s commitment was recognized by numerous organizations, including the Booster Club and the Newton Community Education Foundation, who honored him for his years of service upon his retirement.
Denny’s life outside of work was equally rich and fulfilling. He married Lori Anderson on July 23, 1983, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Newton, and together they built a loving family. As a devoted husband, father, and grandpa, Denny was always present in his children’s and grandchildren’s lives. He and Lori were constants at their children’s events, and Denny enthusiastically coached youth sports. A passionate sports fan, he cheered on the Iowa Hawkeyes and professional teams with Iowa connections, often sharing these moments with his family. Beyond sports, Denny enjoyed casino trips, fishing, and cherished weekend getaways with close friends. His love for animals grew even stronger after the passing of his son, Ryan, in 2016, leading him to support the local animal rescue league with donations of food and supplies.
Denny is lovingly remembered by his wife, Lori Klingensmith of Newton; his children, Cory (Ashlynn) Klingensmith of Newton and Kelly (Dylan) Weiss of Hanlontown; his grandchildren, Julian and Riley Klingensmith, and Baby Ellie Klingensmith (on the way), and Harley Weiss. He is also survived by his sisters, Judy (Dean) Raffety of Newton, Bev Taber of Newton, and Jeanne (Rod) Brouwer of Arizona, along with several nieces and nephews. Denny was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Ryan Klingensmith; his brother, Nick Klingensmith; and nephews, Jay Taber and Josh Miller.
A memorial service to celebrate Denny’s life will be held at Newton High School Upper Gymnasium, with a visitation following the service at the school. The family suggests wearing Newton Cardinal, Iowa Hawkeye, or patriotic attire to honor Denny’s spirit. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Denny’s name to the Newton Booster Club or to an Animal Rescue League of the donor’s choice. Memorials can be left at the school during the service or at Wallace Family Funeral Home and Crematory, reflecting the family’s choice to partner with Wallace Family Funeral Home for these arrangements.
Forever a Cardinal.
