How Familiar Spirits Gain Access
There are various avenues through which demons, masquerading as “familiar spirits,” can infiltrate a person’s life. These pathways often involve practices that weaken spiritual defenses or directly invite demonic influence. Some of these include:
- Divination: Seeking knowledge of the future or hidden things through occult means.
- Transcendental Meditation: Practices that can alter consciousness and open one up to spiritual influences without discernment.
- New Age Visualization: Techniques that can involve guided imagery and spiritual encounters that are not rooted in biblical truth.
- Necromancy: Attempting to communicate with the dead.
- Witchcraft: Engaging in spells, charms, and other occult practices.
- Drugs and Alcohol: Substance abuse can impair judgment and lower inhibitions, making individuals more susceptible to spiritual influence.

For believers, the antidote to these dangers is clear: avoidance. Christians are exhorted to steer clear of these practices and, in the case of alcohol, to exercise moderation and avoid excess. Instead of seeking guidance from potentially demonic sources, believers are called to be filled with the Holy Spirit. The Bible emphasizes that the Christian life is not a passive existence but an active engagement in spiritual warfare. Ephesians 6:12 reminds us, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” Understanding the reality of spiritual warfare helps Christians recognize the true nature of familiar spirits and the dangers they pose. Protection is found not in engaging with these spirits but in drawing closer to God, living a life submitted to His Word, and being empowered by the Holy Spirit.
