With heavy hearts, we share the news of the peaceful passing of Hazel Maude Parker (Mitchell) on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, at the age of 89. Her departure from her home marks the end of a vibrant chapter, deeply felt by her family and all who knew her.
Hazel was a woman who truly embraced life, known for her boundless energy and infectious spirit. A sweet and engaging lady, she was never short of words and often had a playful joke to share, bringing laughter to those around her. Those who knew Hazel understood her amazing character; she rarely complained, always finding a way to see the lighter side of things. Her mindful nature shone through even in her playful remarks, delivered with a touch of humor.
Her warmth extended to everyone she met, whether friend or acquaintance. Hazel held a special fondness for men in uniform, and many RCMP officers from the Bridgetown detachment, Kentville Town Police members, and paramedics from Windsor to Berwick likely hold fond memories of their encounters with her around town and during her various visits. She had a way of connecting with people from all walks of life.
Hazel leaves behind a loving, though now devastated, family. She is survived by her children: Cecil (Brenda Lee) Parker, Newman (Annette) Parker, Heather (Roland) Hannifan, and Ellie (George) Stevenson. Remembering her inclusive heart, we acknowledge her other children, John (Deidre) and Annie, ensuring they know they were also cherished deeply by their mother. Hazel was predeceased by her mother, Gertrude Mitchell; her husband, Cecil Parker; and her partner, Ron Steadman. She also mourned the loss of her children Bruce, Florence, Donnie, and Cecilia. In a testament to her loving nature, Hazel lovingly embraced her granddaughter, Cecilia Angel, as a special ‘daughter,’ a bond that brought comfort after the loss of her daughter Cecilia.
Many special individuals enriched Hazel’s life, and she deeply appreciated each of them. Her grandson, Matthew, held a special place as her dedicated chauffeur, always ready to assist her with care and affection.
Hazel’s legacy extends through her numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she recently celebrated becoming a great-great grandmother with the arrival of Ella. Even as her health declined and memories became fainter, her pride in her family remained strong. She possessed an immense capacity for love, and her family feels profoundly blessed to have had such an extraordinary woman in their lives. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Cards were a beloved pastime for Hazel, and she cherished the friendship of her neighbors, Carl and Merylse. They generously shared their time, often inviting Hazel for games of forty-fives, bringing joy and connection into her life.
Giving back to her community was important to Hazel. She dedicated her time to volunteering with the Salvation Army Christmas Kettles and, during her time in Bridgetown, regularly supported the Salvation Army’s War Cry at the local liquor store every Friday. She also contributed to the Wolfville Legion Poppy Fund. Her inability to continue her work with the Christmas Kettles in later years was a source of great sadness for her.
As we bid farewell to Hazel Maude, we acknowledge the deep void left in our hearts. Words struggle to express the sense of loss, but we can find solace in aspiring to live with the same kindness and generosity that she exemplified.
In her wishes, Hazel would encourage everyone to consider their spiritual path and give their life to Jesus. Mom, we love you deeply and hold onto the hope of reuniting in Heaven.
The family has entrusted the funeral arrangements to White Family Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Kentville. For those wishing to honor Hazel’s memory, donations can be made to the Salvation Army or a charity of your choice.
