Discover the Kathryn M. York Adapted Aquatics Center at Wilson Family Y

The Wilson Family Y is proud to house the Kathryn M. York Adapted Aquatics Center, a unique facility dedicated to enriching the lives of individuals facing physical and developmental challenges. Known affectionately as “Katie’s Pool,” this special center was created to celebrate the life and legacy of Katie York, a cherished Y employee whose life was tragically cut short by a seizure disorder in 2008. Katie’s unwavering faith, strong determination, and passionate commitment to serving individuals with disabilities through adapted aquatics programs deeply inspired everyone around her. The outpouring of love and support from Katie’s family, friends, and the wider community made the vision of this state-of-the-art center a reality. Opened on June 2, 2010, which would have been Katie’s 23rd birthday, the center has since become a beacon of hope, strengthening the lives of over 1,000 individuals each month through its impactful programs.

State-of-the-Art Adapted Aquatics Facility

Katie’s Pool is thoughtfully designed as a 33 x 60-foot therapy pool, catering to both shallow and deep-water activities. Accessibility is paramount, featuring a zero-entry access point and a 42-foot wheelchair ramp gently sloping into the shallow end. Understanding the unique needs of its users, the center includes specially adapted changing rooms equipped with a lift system, ensuring comfort and dignity for all. Furthermore, the pool employs a cutting-edge UV sanitation system. This advanced system is particularly beneficial for individuals with sensitivities or illnesses that can be aggravated by traditional chlorine-based filtration, promoting a healthier and more comfortable aquatic environment. Recognized as the largest public therapy pool in the southeastern region, Katie’s Pool at Wilson Family Y stands as a testament to inclusive and accessible wellness.
