Getting Started with the Family Crest Quest

To begin your quest, head to Varrock and locate the small house southeast of the East Bank. Inside, you’ll find Dimintheis.

Talk to Dimintheis about the family crest. He will explain that his sons have scattered the crest pieces and task you with retrieving them. You’ll need to visit each son in a specific order to gather all the pieces. Let’s start with the first son, Caleb.

Retrieving Caleb’s Crest Piece: The Cooked Fish Challenge

Caleb can be found in a house northeast of the Catherby bank.

Speak with Caleb, and you’ll discover his peculiar request. To get his piece of the family crest, you must provide him with a selection of perfectly cooked fish. Caleb requires the following:

  • Shrimp
  • Salmon
  • Tuna
  • Bass
  • Swordfish

Note: If your Cooking or Fishing skills aren’t up to par, you can easily purchase these cooked fish from the Grand Exchange or other players.

Once you have gathered all the cooked fish, give them to Caleb. In return, he will hand over his piece of the family crest and direct you to his second brother in Al Kharid. If he doesn’t mention the next brother, simply speak to him again, and he will guide you to the Gem Trader in Al Kharid.

Obtaining the Nobleman’s Crest Piece: Gold and Jewels

Your next destination is Al Kharid. Talk to the Gem Trader there to learn about the second son. He will point you towards a Nobleman with a distinctive yellow cape, often seen near the gold rocks in the Scorpion Pit Chasm mine, north of Al Kharid.

Find the Nobleman in the Scorpion Pit mine.

Speak to the Nobleman, and he will reveal his extravagant demands. To acquire his piece of the crest, you must bring him a ruby ring and a ruby necklace, both crafted from the finest gold. He suggests seeking out a dwarf named Boot in the Dwarven Mines, who knows the location of this exceptional gold.

The Finest Gold: Boot and the Witchaven Ruin

Venture into the Dwarven Mines beneath Falador. The easiest way to reach Falador is by using the Falador teleport spell if you have level 37 Magic. Locate Boot in the far western corner of the mine.

Talk to Boot, and he will reveal that the finest gold is hidden within an underground ruin near Witchaven.

Travel to Witchaven, southeast of Ardougne. If you have level 51 Magic and have completed the Plague City quest, the Ardougne teleport is the quickest route. Otherwise, make your way there manually. West of Witchaven village, find the old ruin entrance and descend into it.

Navigate past the Hobgoblins (level 28) and Ogres (level 53) to a locked chamber. To unlock the door, you must manipulate levers in a specific sequence:

  1. Pull the northern wall lever up.
  2. Enter the southern room and pull that lever up.
  3. Return to the northern wall and pull that lever down.
  4. Go into the northern room and pull that lever up.
  5. Leave the room and pull the lever on the northern wall up.
  6. Go back to the southern room and pull that lever down.

Note: If you are unsure of a lever’s position, use the “inspect” option to check if it’s up or down.

Once unlocked, enter the chamber and mine two ‘perfect’ gold ores from the rocks. Be cautious of the Hellhounds (level 122) in the area.

Smelt the perfect gold ores into gold bars at a furnace. With two gold bars, two rubies, a ring mould, and a necklace mould in your inventory, use a furnace to craft a ruby ring and a ruby necklace from the finest gold.

Return to the Nobleman in Al Kharid and give him the ruby ring and necklace. He will reward you with his piece of the crest and direct you to his younger brother.

Facing Chronozon for Johnathon’s Crest Piece

For the final crest piece, you’ll need to prepare for a dangerous encounter. Gather the following items before seeking out the third son, Johnathon:

  • Anti-poison potion (bring two, one for Johnathon and one for yourself)
  • Good armor and weapon
  • Runes to cast all four blast spells (Wind Blast, Water Blast, Earth Blast, Fire Blast)
  • Level 59 Magic, or a Wizard’s Mind Bomb (obtainable from the Falador Bar for 2 coins). A Wizard’s Mind Bomb boosts your Magic level by 3 temporarily, allowing completion with level 56 Magic.

Head to the Jolly Boar Inn, northeast of Varrock. It’s marked as a large bar on the world map. Go to the second floor and find Johnathon in the northwest room.

Talk to Johnathon. You’ll find he has been poisoned. Use an anti-poison potion on him to cure him. He will explain about poison spiders and Chronozon (level 170), who holds his piece of the crest. Johnathon reveals that Chronozon can only be defeated by casting all four blast spells on him.

Now, with all necessary items, travel to Edgeville. Head south of the bank to the dungeon entrance marked with a “!” on the map. This is the Wilderness Dungeon. Chronozon is located deep within, on level 3 of the wilderness dungeon, in a non-multi combat area.

Descend into the dungeon and pass the gate, guarded by aggressive skeletons. Navigate past Thugs (level 10) and Chaos Druids (level 13). Proceed north, avoiding skeletons (level 45), and head west through the narrow hallway.

Be prepared to face Black Demons (level 172) and Poison Spiders (level 64). Continue west then south until you reach a room with the Earth Obelisk and Chronozon (level 170).

Attack Chronozon. To defeat him, you must successfully cast each of the four blast spells (Wind Blast, Water Blast, Earth Blast, Fire Blast) on him at least once during the fight. Protect from Melee prayer is highly recommended.

Strategy: You can use the pillar in the back of the cage to avoid Chronozon’s melee attacks. Eliminate any Poison Spiders that attack you, cure poison if needed, and then cast the blast spells on Chronozon. Alternatively, use ranged equipment, stand behind the pillar, cast spells, and then range him down.

Once Chronozon is defeated, collect the final crest piece and escape the dungeon!

Completing the Family Crest Quest and Gauntlet Enchantments

With all three crest pieces in hand, combine them to form the Family Crest. Return to Dimintheis in Varrock and speak to him. He will be grateful and reward you for your efforts, completing the Family Crest quest!

Gauntlet Enchantments:

The Family Crest quest rewards you with gauntlets that can be enchanted by each of Dimintheis’ sons, granting special benefits:

  • Cooking Gauntlets (Caleb in Catherby): Reduces food burning rate while cooking.
  • Goldsmithing Gauntlets (Nobleman near Scorpion Pit): Increases Smithing experience when smelting gold.
  • Chaos Gauntlets (Johnathon in Jolly Boar Inn): Increases the maximum damage and accuracy of Bolt spells.

You receive one free enchantment. Subsequent re-enchantments by any son cost 25,000 GP each.
