Finding the right vehicle for a family of 5 can be a challenging task. Many families face this decision when their needs evolve, seeking a balance of space, comfort, and practicality. Like many, we’ve been navigating this very process, looking for the ideal car to accommodate our family of five, including three kids in booster seats, and our active lifestyle which includes biking and road trips. Currently, we drive a Sienna, which has served us well, but with 200,000 miles on it, the search for a new vehicle is definitely on.
Initially, the Mercedes Sprinter van caught our attention. The appeal is undeniable: immense space, comfortable seating, and even the possibility of sleeping inside during longer journeys. The fuel mileage is also surprisingly reasonable for its size. However, the sheer size of the Sprinter presents some significant drawbacks. Daily commuting and navigating city parking become cumbersome, and the height restriction of many parking garages (typically 8 feet or lower) becomes a constant worry.
Ford’s Transit van offers another option in this category. While the height is more manageable for city driving and parking, and the interior space is versatile and modular, the rear-wheel-drive configuration is a deal-breaker for families who live in or travel to areas with winter conditions. For us, winter capability is essential, making the rear-wheel-drive Transit unsuitable.
Considering these limitations, we’ve shifted our focus to used SUVs, specifically the Chevrolet Suburban models from 2009 to 2013. Consumer Reports consistently rates these years favorably, and the interior dimensions are impressive. One of the most attractive aspects is the price point; fully loaded models can be found for under $30,000. Even with the third row seats in use, the Suburban still offers substantial cargo space. Furthermore, roof rack and tow hitch options provide even more versatility for luggage, gear, or even a trailer, as others have suggested. While sleeping a family of five inside might be a bit cozy, it’s a viable option for shorter trips or emergencies.
Our vehicle search, mirroring yours, has led us to seriously consider a used Suburban as a practical and cost-effective solution for a family of five. It balances space, capability, and affordability in a way that addresses many of the challenges families face.
On a final personal note, we also prioritize family closeness during travel. Like you, we often let our younger children sleep with or near us, finding it a rewarding experience for everyone involved. This element of family connection is just as important as the vehicle itself when making these choices.
