An Evening of Celebration with the San Diego Symphony | Friday, Oct. 21

In a spectacular debut concert, the Epstein Family Amphitheater hosted “An Evening of Celebration” featuring the renowned San Diego Symphony alongside talented UC San Diego musicians. This special program highlighted a blend of classical and contemporary music, including pieces from iconic composers like Igor Stravinsky and Samuel Barber, as well as works from UC San Diego professors Rand Steiger and Lei Liang. Alternative rock fans were treated to a fantastic double bill at the Epstein Family Amphitheater with Death Cab for Cutie and Yo La Tengo. Grammy-nominated Death Cab for Cutie, a staple in the alternative music scene, headlined the evening, touring in support of their latest album “Asphalt Meadows.” Indie rock legends Yo La Tengo set the stage with an opening performance, creating an electric atmosphere. Community Fest and Film Night | Sunday, Oct. 23

The Epstein Family Amphitheater extended its appeal beyond concerts by hosting a free, day-long “Community Fest and Film Night.” Conveniently located near the Central Campus trolley station on the UC San Diego Blue Line, this event offered family-friendly entertainment for all ages. Highlights included a whimsical giant puppet parade by the La Jolla Playhouse and Animal Cracker Conspiracy, engaging salsa lessons, and energetic performances by the Young Lions Jazz Ensemble. Celebrating Latinx History Month at UC San Diego, ArtPower presented the world premiere of “Hasta La Muerta” by Las Cafeteras at the Epstein Family Amphitheater. This enthralling production is deeply rooted in Día de los Muertos, the indigenous Mexican tradition of celebrating life and death. “Hasta La Muerta” honored ancestors through a passionate, multi-dimensional performance featuring song, dance, a traditional altar, and original music from Las Cafeteras. Out at the Amphitheater Drag Show | Friday, Oct. 28

In a vibrant and inclusive event, the Epstein Family Amphitheater hosted an “Out at the Amphitheater Drag Show.” A collaboration between the undergraduate colleges, LGBT Resource Center, and Triton Fest, this Halloween-themed drag show was a one-of-a-kind spectacle. The event featured renowned RuPaul’s Drag Race stars Lala Ri and Daya Betty, alongside iconic local drag talent. Blacktronika: Where I Stand Festival | Saturday, Oct. 29

The “Blacktronika: Where I Stand Festival” transformed the Epstein Family Amphitheater into a hub of innovative sound and cultural expression. Curated from the UC San Diego Music course Blacktronika by Professor King Britt, the festival brought together six groundbreaking musical groups spanning free jazz to cosmic funk. Featured artists included Irreversible Entanglements, Tyshawn Sorey and King Britt, Xenia Rubinos, Chimurenga Renaissance, Georgia Ann Muldrow, and 5hz. This full day of sonic exploration celebrated the contributions of innovators of color to electronic music, solidifying the amphitheater’s role in showcasing cutting-edge and culturally significant artistic endeavors.
