Hello Valued Patients,
At Family Medical & Associates, we remain committed to your health and well-being. We understand that navigating the evolving landscape of COVID-19 can be challenging, and we are here to provide you with clear, up-to-date information and guidance. This update addresses the new COVID-19 vaccines targeting Omicron variants and the latest CDC guidelines, as well as our ongoing patient care policies at Family Medical & Associates.
Understanding the New COVID-19 Vaccines
Exciting news regarding COVID-19 vaccines! Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna have developed updated vaccines that offer enhanced protection against the highly contagious Omicron variants, which are currently the dominant strains across the nation. These reformulated vaccines are anticipated to receive approval from both the FDA and CDC shortly, with ожидаемая availability around mid-September – just around the corner.
Should You Wait for the Updated Vaccine?
This is a common question, and expert opinions vary, leading to some confusion. It’s important to understand that current vaccines continue to provide significant protection against severe illness and hospitalization from COVID-19. However, these new, updated vaccines are designed to offer even better protection, specifically against the Omicron variants.
Another factor to consider is vaccine timing. Administering vaccines too closely together may not allow for the optimal immune response. After careful review of available data, our recommendation at Family Medical & Associates is to wait for the Omicron-specific vaccine in September, unless you fall into one of the following categories within the next 4-6 weeks:
- Upcoming Travel: If you have planned travel involving airplanes or trains.
- High-Risk Situations: If you are facing a situation that compromises your immune system, such as starting chemotherapy or immunosuppressant medications.
- Personal Preference: If you prefer to receive a booster now for peace of mind.
Family Medical & Associates will continue to offer the current Pfizer vaccine for those who choose to get boosted now. Please contact us to discuss your individual circumstances and make an informed decision.
CDC Updates COVID-19 Guidelines
The CDC recently released updated guidelines ( https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/71/wr/mm7133e1.htm ) aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19. These guidelines represent a relaxation of some previous recommendations. The CDC emphasizes that in areas with high COVID-19 transmission levels, individuals should continue to take precautions, including considering masking in indoor public spaces. This recommendation applies to everyone, not just those at high risk.
Wake County, where Family Medical & Associates is located, currently has a high rate of COVID-19 transmission. We have also observed an increase in hospitalizations in recent months, although not to the levels seen last winter. If you are at higher risk due to age, underlying health conditions, or medications, we strongly encourage you to adhere to masking guidelines and exercise caution in public settings. We recommend reviewing the CDC guidelines link above for detailed information and recommendations.
Our Commitment at Family Medical Associates of Raleigh
From all of us at Family Medical Associates of Raleigh, we extend our sincere gratitude for your patience and unwavering support over the past year. Your health and the well-being of our staff remain our top priorities. We are pleased that vaccines are readily accessible and that we continue to offer them to our patients.
While the risk of COVID-19 exposure is lower than in early 2022, we have seen a significant increase in transmission in our community recently due to emerging Omicron variants. As healthcare providers, we believe it is our responsibility to maintain measures that protect both you and our team.

NC DHHS Recommendations for Masking in Public Places:
The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NC DHHS) recommends wearing a mask in public places under the following circumstances:
- If you are at high risk for severe illness.
- If you are unvaccinated or not up-to-date on your COVID-19 vaccines.
- If you have COVID-19 or have been exposed to the virus.
- If you desire an added layer of protection.
- If you are in a high-risk setting (e.g., healthcare, long-term care, correctional facilities, homeless shelters).
- If you are in an area with high COVID-19 levels.
Important Mask Guidelines:
- Ensure your mask covers both your nose and mouth.
- The mask should fit securely under your chin.
- It should fit snugly against your face.
- Make sure you can breathe comfortably while wearing it.
If you are visiting someone vulnerable to severe COVID-19, please wear a mask. If you have been in contact with someone who is sick with COVID-19, consider self-testing or visiting your doctor for testing.
Reasons for Optimism:
- Vaccines and Boosters Readily Available: Vaccines and boosters are widely accessible, including at Family Medical Associates. You can receive your vaccine during a scheduled appointment or book a dedicated nurse visit for a vaccine-only appointment.
- Effective Treatments Available: Treatment options are available for individuals at higher risk of severe illness.
