Mackinac Island is truly a unique destination and a must-visit in Michigan. Stepping onto the island is like stepping back in time, where horse-drawn carriages are the primary mode of transportation, fudge shops line the streets, and historic Fort Mackinac stands guard. With kids, a two-day trip is ideal to experience the island’s highlights. Make sure to include these in your itinerary:
- Horse-Drawn Carriage Tour: A classic Mackinac Island experience! The guided tours are not only informative, providing a historical overview of the island, but also entertaining for all ages. Opt for a tour that includes a stop at Fort Mackinac to witness the cannon firing demonstration – be prepared, it’s loud!
- Bike Around the Island: Rent bikes and enjoy a scenic ride around the island’s perimeter. The relatively flat 8-mile loop is manageable for most families. For younger children, consider renting a Burley trailer. For a fun challenge, try a tandem bike and see who the real pedaler is!
- Indulge in Fudge: No trip to Mackinac Island is complete without sampling the famous Mackinac fudge. Visit one (or several!) of the many fudge shops and watch the fudge being made – it’s a treat for the senses.
- Horseback Riding: For horse-loving kids (and adults!), experiencing the island on horseback is a memorable activity. Several stables offer guided rides suitable for different skill levels.
For accommodation, the iconic Grand Hotel offers a luxurious splurge, now complete with a pool. For more budget-friendly options, consider staying in mainland Mackinaw City or St. Ignace, and taking a ferry to the island. Campgrounds and various hotels are available on the mainland to suit different preferences.
Traverse City: Beaches, Cherries, and Bay Views
Traverse City is another gem in Michigan, blending natural beauty with a vibrant town atmosphere. While known for its wine tours and microbreweries that appeal to adults, Traverse City also offers plenty of family-friendly activities. From relaxing on beautiful beaches to exploring the charming downtown, there’s something for everyone. If you visit during the summer, the National Cherry Festival is a must-experience, and be sure to try all things cherry-flavored! Here are a few recommendations for your family trip:
- Boat Tour on Grand Traverse Bay: For a memorable splurge, consider a boat tour on the stunning Grand Traverse Bay. Several options are available, from scenic cruises to sailing adventures.
- Kayaking or Paddleboarding: For a more budget-friendly water activity, rent kayaks or paddleboards and explore the bay at your own pace. It’s a fantastic way to enjoy the clear waters and beautiful scenery.
- Explore Nearby Attractions: Traverse City is conveniently located near Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore and other beautiful beachside parks and attractions. It makes a great central location for exploring the northwestern Lower Peninsula.
Frankenmuth: Michigan’s Little Bavaria
Frankenmuth , often called “Little Bavaria,” is a charming town with a unique German heritage. While I haven’t personally visited yet, it comes highly recommended by friends and is on my list! From year-round Christmas spirit at Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland to cheese tasting and indoor waterparks, Frankenmuth promises a fun-filled family vacation. Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland is an experience in itself, and the town offers various family-friendly attractions and events throughout the year.
Immersive Nature Escapes: Discover Michigan’s Wild Side
Michigan’s natural beauty is undeniable, offering incredible landscapes and outdoor adventures. Whether you’re seeking serene forests, dramatic dunes, or stunning waterfalls, Michigan’s nature destinations will not disappoint. Inspired by my brother and father’s love for nature exploration, these destinations are perfect for families wanting to connect with the outdoors.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore: Iconic Lake Michigan Views
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is an iconic Michigan destination, boasting towering sand dunes and breathtaking views of Lake Michigan. A visit can be enjoyed as a day trip, with a scenic drive along Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive and a climb up the famous Dune Climb near the visitor center. While the climb to the top of the dune is challenging but rewarding, be warned: reaching the lake from the top of the Dune Climb is still a strenuous two-mile hike down (and back up!). Younger kids will love running up and down the initial Dune Climb, while teenagers will have a memorable (and perhaps complain-filled!) experience.
To extend your nature adventure, consider combining Sleeping Bear Dunes with a trip to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula (The U.P.): A Wild and Rugged Adventure
Michigan’s Upper Peninsula is a vast and beautiful region offering a true escape into nature. To fully experience the U.P.’s wilderness, consider renting an RV! While restaurants and large towns are less frequent, and cell service can be spotty, the rewards are immense. Must-see destinations in the U.P. include:
- Tahquamenon Falls State Park: Home to the majestic Tahquamenon Falls, often referred to as the “Rootbeer Falls” due to their amber color. Explore the various trails and viewpoints to witness the Upper and Lower Falls. Be prepared for stairs if you want to get close to the Lower Falls.
- Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore: Famous for its stunning sandstone cliffs along Lake Superior, best viewed from the water. Consider a boat tour or kayaking trip to fully appreciate the colorful rock formations.
- Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park (The Porkies): For those seeking mountains in Michigan, head to the Porcupine Mountains. This expansive wilderness area offers hiking trails, waterfalls, and stunning views of Lake Superior.

- Age Considerations: For families with young children, consider waiting until they are older and can handle stairs at Tahquamenon Falls and hiking in the Porcupine Mountains. Pictured Rocks offers more accessible, “touristy” options suitable for all ages.
Great Lakes Beaches: Sun, Sand, and Freshwater Fun
Michigan boasts an extensive freshwater coastline along the Great Lakes, offering beautiful sandy beaches perfect for family fun. For a day trip, Warren Dunes State Park is a great option with impressive dunes to climb, trails to explore, and expansive beaches. They also offer a campground for a budget-friendly beach vacation.
For a longer beach vacation, consider renting a beach house in a charming Michigan beach town. South Haven, Holland, Saugatuck, and St. Joseph are all fantastic choices, each with its own unique character. Beach house rentals range from luxurious beachfront properties to more affordable options within walking distance of the beach. Bring your beach wagon for chairs and gear, a sun shelter for little ones, and get ready to enjoy the beautiful Michigan shoreline. When searching for rentals, look for houses that include beach amenities for added convenience.

Some of my personal favorites include Gull Lake and Torch Lake, but exploring lake rental websites will reveal countless fantastic options across the state.

For a unique Gull Lake vacation, consider joining a family camp at Gull Lake Ministries for a structured and engaging lakeside experience. Gull Lake also offers golfing at Gull Lake View, and delicious dining options at The Kitchen House, South Kitchen, and the casual Chicken House (a seasonal outdoor eatery). For an ultimate splurge, you can even rent this entire island house on Gull Lake!
Torch Lake: Crystal Clear Waters and Northern Charm
Torch Lake , located further north, is renowned for its stunningly clear turquoise waters and expansive size. Torch Lake can serve as a fantastic base for exploring neighboring towns like Traverse City or venturing to Sleeping Bear Dunes, offering a blend of lake relaxation and access to other attractions.
When planning an inland lake house rental, consider these factors:

The Creation Museum in Petersburg, KY, offers exhibits exploring biblical history. For younger children, the museum exhibits might be text-heavy, but the nearby Ark Encounter is an awe-inspiring attraction for all ages. Located about 45 minutes from the museum, the Ark Encounter features a life-size replica of Noah’s Ark, providing a truly immersive experience.
Greenfield Village and Henry Ford Museum: American Innovation and History
Greenfield Village , part of the Henry Ford Museum complex in Dearborn, Michigan, offers a fascinating journey through American history. Spend a day exploring historic homes, workshops, and exhibits. Enjoy a ride in a Model T car or take a steam train ride (be prepared for some soot from the steam engine!). Consider visiting the Henry Ford Museum on a separate day, as both attractions are extensive and best explored at a relaxed pace.

The Alligator Sanctuary , while not as widely known, is a unique and intriguing destination. Friends have recommended this sanctuary, which houses a variety of alligators and other reptiles. It’s a smaller, more intimate wildlife experience and could be a fun stop, perhaps combined with an ice cream treat on the way back.

For families who love excitement and thrills, Michigan and nearby states offer a range of recreational adventures, from amusement parks to water parks. Mixing nature and beach days with rollercoasters and waterslides can create a balanced and exciting family vacation.
Kings Island and Great Wolf Lodge: Rollercoasters and Indoor Water Park Fun
Kings Island in Cincinnati, OH, boasts a wide array of rollercoasters for all ages, along with a separate water park. Consider purchasing a drink package for refills throughout the day. Adjacent to Kings Island is Great Wolf Lodge, offering a convenient and splurge-worthy accommodation option with its own indoor water park. Staying at Great Wolf Lodge and spending a day at Kings Island could make for an action-packed vacation.
Cedar Point: The Rollercoaster Capital
Cedar Point in Sandusky, OH, is a legendary amusement park, often dubbed the “Rollercoaster Capital of the World.” For many, like myself, Cedar Point holds nostalgic childhood memories, while continually adding new and thrilling rides. It’s also the location of my mom’s infamous rollercoaster-induced moment!

Michigan’s Adventure is a smaller amusement park located in Muskegon, Michigan. It’s a perfect option for a day of fun, especially when traveling to or from other Michigan destinations.
Kalahari Resorts & Conventions: Water Park Paradise
Kalahari Resorts & Conventions in Sandusky, OH, is a water park enthusiast’s dream. Featuring a massive outdoor water park (ideal for teens) and a large indoor water park similar to Great Wolf Lodge, Kalahari offers a vast array of water attractions and activities.
Big City Experiences: Urban Adventures in the Midwest
For a change of pace, consider a big city trip. Living near Chicago and Detroit makes urban getaways easily accessible and feel like a true vacation without extensive travel time – a win-win for both kids and parents.
